STREET INTERVIEW: Joey Marchy

Joey, the architect of the Urban Jacksonville Blog, is a strong community advocate focused on his community and the city he calls home. With his eyes on neighborhood development and politics, he continues to unroll fresh ideas and projects for Jacksonville as he networks closely with other urban advocates and community organizers. You can catch him on episodes of Urban Jacksonville Weekly or enjoying a good beer and a great venue catching up with friends.

Favorite place to get a drink in Jax?
Joey: Underbelly in 5 Points and Shantytown.

What do you think is the best kind of activism to get into in 2010?
Joey: Any. We need more people to get involved and do things on their own. No one is going to throw that art show or start that blog for you. We, as a city, have to take control of our future and make it what we want it to be.

Important Jacksonville landmark?
Joey: Wormans and Carl's on Main Street

What is the glass if not half empty and not half full?
Joey: I think we need to dump the water out of the glass and smash it against the wall. This city needs to be re-engineered and rethought.

How old is Urban Jacksonville?
Joey: Our born date is 6-17-2005

Turn the table on me, and ask me a question…
Joey: What is the future of JaxScene without Tom P, it's founder and architect?
David: I think although Tom has announced his move he will always be unanimous with Jaxscene. Tom has put a lot of energy into this blog, as well as countless coverage of local events, well before REAX came to Jacksonville, or even before the existence of JaxScene. I have no doubt that even if he doesn’t post here, he will have a hand in the growth of JaxScene. From March 08 until now my involvement with JaxScene has been guided closely by Tom. We have worked out new ideas for how the blog should be, but he always let me do what I wanted to if it was cool. One of which was the last redesign of the blog. He instilled in me the focus of why he started it; Music, Art, Community. Also, from not being here, he as played a part in my own reconciliation with where I live and how cool it can really be. In the coming months I want to focus on those strong suites. I want to bring on more energy of those who want to contribute to support our local events and show more media from events that you may not have had a chance to see. As you predicted correctly, I am also working on a redesign to reduce the side gutter clutter and bring an aesthetic focus to media. By the way Tom is bringing back The Hum.

What is your super power?
Joey: Making free time disappear.

Make up an unnecessary quote.
Joey: I didn't make this up, it's from Michael Hyatt the CEO of Tomas Nelson Publishers » "When times are tough, vision is the first casualty. Before conditions can improve, it is the first thing we must recover."

Your favorite album so far in 2010?
Joey: The Stimulus Package - South Rakkas Crew.

Anything else you would like to add?
Joey: Last Saturday, I hosted a LIVE version of Urban Jacksonville Weekly at the Burrito Gallery. We talked to Ian Ranne of Shantytown Pub and Hip Hop Hell Records and had special guest sets by Tough Junkie.

STREET INTERVIEW: Hface

Hface is a lovley lady with a real love for friends who can make a cup of coffee that will melt your face. When not in route to save the world one neighborhood at a time she finds time to have some unconventional fun.

Have you ever fell during dancing?
Hface: Oh God yes! I was dancing one night on roller skates at a bar and fell flat on my ass in front of everyone...rad.

Cindy Lauper, Belinda Carlisle, or Madonna?
Hface: Cindy now that she loves the gays.

Have you ever had a parasite?
Hface: I always think I have a tapeworm because I eat more than anyone I know.

Are you planning on changing the world? How?
Hface: I'd like to make a dent. I am going to New Orleans again in March to work on rebuilding some more houses.

You just can’t get enough of what?
Hface: PEANUT BUTTER WHOPPERS

What’s an ideal attractive feature to you?
Hface: eyelashes and earlobes

Invent and describe your own animal based mutant character for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Hface: A beaver that was overly large and had fangs for his buckteeth and he would attack people by ripping out their jugular. maybe for aesthetics he's had some of those triangles down his back like old cartoon dinosaurs.

How do you fasten? Screws, Bolts, or Glue?
Hface: Glitter glue sticks

Anything else you would like to add?
Hface: Black coffee is the way, the truth, and the life. ...aaaaaand I like long walks on the beach. lawl.

ESHC of Jacksonville, Inc. is Gearing Up for Annual Homeless Count and Survey

Jacksonville, FL: The Emergency Services and Homeless Coalition of Jacksonville (ESHC) is preparing for their annual Homeless Point in Time Count and Survey. The Point in Time count is a one day snapshot of who is homeless during the coldest month of the year. Every January ESHC, in partnership with the Northeast Florida Center for Community Initiatives at UNF, volunteers and a number of member agencies, conducts interviews and counts the homeless population of Duval, Nassau and Clay counties. This is currently the most accurate way of learning just how many adults and children have no where to live.

“This count not only provides information on the number of people that are homeless, but who they are,” says Dawn Gilman, Executive Director. “We anticipate both an increase in total numbers in all counties and a percentage increase in homeless children and veterans.”

Last year ESHC reported 3,594 homeless adults and children in all three counties which is a 27% increase from 2008. This year’s count is expected to be even higher and more diverse due to the state of the economy. Job loss and lack of healthcare are contributing to a rise in families becoming the new face of homelessness.

ESHC is currently seeking volunteers to help with the count on January 25, 2010. Various timeslots are available throughout the day. Volunteers will survey and count in all three counties at a number of locations and must be at least 18 years old. “The more volunteers we have the more adults and children we are able to count and really define where help is needed the most,” Gilman adds.

ESHC is committed to coordinating efforts to raise, distribute and manage resources for preventing and ending homelessness. As a Lead Agency for Duval, Clay and Nassau counties, ESHC assists member organizations in applying for and receiving federal and state grant money, develops the local homeless Continuum of Care plan and coordinates the delivery of services for the homeless and those with extremely low incomes. ESHC employs two staff members and supports an Americorps VISTA. For information about volunteering or donating to ESHC contact Dawn Gilman at 904.384.1366 or email dgilman@eshcnet.org.

Interview with Divets/Review of Divets and Anisette: by John Touchton

Rhode Island has been the birth place of some of my favorite bands: Arab on Radar, Daughters, Lightning Bolt and even The Body, who just played here last weekend. Last Monday night, I was able to befriend two more bands, stemming from the Ocean State; Divets, a one man psych project and math rock trio, Anisette, have been all along the East Coast, braving some of the coast’s recent blizzards and backwoods towns, ending up at Doozer’s Pub. Their arrival in Jacksonville was not welcomed by sunshine and warm weather as they had hoped for, nor were their many people at the show to greet them. But sometimes those empty-room shows can provide a more intimate experience, as well as a chance to talk with both Anisette and Divets about some of the stranger shows they’ve played this tour.

After the show, we all met at a friend’s house in Riverside to consume Busch, cheap wine and some fresh Californian herbs that they had acquired on their trip. The living room was live with drunken energy, but we managed to talk above everyone else and discuss what it’s like to play those awkward shows when on a self-booked tour.

John: You guys have traveled a long way, just to play for a few people at Doozer’s. I’m sure you’ve had similar shows on your way down. What do you think is the strangest show you’ve played, thus far?

Joe (Divets): This guy who was supposed to help us book the tour only ended up booking two dates. One place, in Big Stone Gap, VA, was called The Edge. It was this Christian, straight edge venue. They immediately acted weary around us and said that if we cursed at all, we’d have to leave. When we first arrived there was this woman standing at the venue, wearing an “I’m for Jesus” shirt. They didn’t care for us too much.

John: That reminds me of the Murray Hill Theatre here in Jacksonville. Did any thing good come from the show?

Joe: We received some expired orange juice, bread, and milk.

John: Any other difficulties during the tour?

Joe: There was another Christian venue in Mill Spring, NC that we were supposed to play. When we got to town there were these red necks with guns that just sat there staring at us, wickedly. We got to the venue and they told us that no one was coming out, but we could set up and play if we wanted. Luckily, our friends from Blastoids were playing a house show about three hours away, in Winston Salem, NC, so we ended up playing there instead.

John: That must’ve been a relief. I think that those kinds of shows are unavoidable, but worth it to play a few good ones. Are there any dates that you guys are excited about?

Joe: Yeah. We’re playing a show in Queens, NY as our last date. It’s this zine release show. There’s something like, eight bands playing and I guess it’s supposed to be a big deal. We’re playing Orlando tomorrow and then driving, I think, eighteen hours straight to Queens. We’re stoked.

Realizing that it was nearly 5am, we decided to call it a night. We said our goodbyes and reaffirmed plans for future National Dairy/Anisette/Divets shows.

Although they played for an almost empty bar, both Divets and Anisette kept a good attitude and it showed through their performances. We traded some of our merchandise for a few Divets/Anisette split mini-discs, stayed up late and discussed music all night. I feel that the show, overall, was fun and we met some cool kids from Rhode Island. Expect more music from that little mound of dirt off the coast to pop up in Jacksonville’s future.

The Body and Civilization: by John Touchton

IMG_0723.JPG
Originally uploaded by jaxscene
Night did fall. And a penetrating breeze, whispering chilling rumors of evil and despair, did carry him steadfast, through vast plains of concrete and to his destination. The gates of Wambolt St. would steer our protagonist to his ruin… Sorry for the dark tone. Have I been reading too much Cormac McCarthy, you ask? Or could such grey narrative be due to the quality doses of doom, administered by Providence based duo, The Body and Jacksonville’s own, Civilization? Saturday night was borderline freezing, but such low temperature wasn’t going to curb the desires of those in need of a fix of iniquitous metal.

Warehouse 8b has been home to a collection of artists, while also providing a place for bands to practice and book shows. Saturday night, however, Unit 8b acted more as a giant refrigerator, in which to host a night of loud music played through very large amps. The first band that played was called Nuclear 2. As soon as they started they were almost finished. After an assault of blast beats and cymbal crashes that lasted only minutes, the masked drummer angrily removed his outer face and threw down his drumsticks, with frustration. This was my queue to get warm by the fire outside, but only embers remained, smoldering and emitting a thick smoke, reminiscent of countless fires before it.

Speaking of nostalgia, watching Civilization that evening reminded me of just how long they’ve been playing. Very few Jacksonville bands from five years ago are still together. Josh and Eric, however, still seem to enjoy damaging eardrums and their progress, after losing a bass player to the Portland, Oregon migration movement, shows that a two piece band can still deliver volumes of trembling guitar riffs and droning drum beats. Civilization’s set, that evening, tore through the cold and vibrated the sternums of stoned onlookers. Boasting their freshly pressed LPs and t-shirts, their merch table also presented a few zines from the main library’s new collection. According to Josh, they’ve just obtained the entire archive of Maximum Rock and Roll. Be sure to check out Civilization again on Jan. 16 at the 5 Points Theatre, as they provide an original soundtrack to classic cinema.

Gazed upon through the darkness, The Body slowly assembled and at the center of this frigid warehouse was the warmth of a small crowd of anticipators. Only a vague light subtly illuminated the room with a quiet shine. With the first chord, struck a heavy blow. The ground trembled and within measures everyone seemed to be swaying in unison, entranced by such bleak sound waves. Although this was my first chance to see The Body perform, I did managed to catch a hip-hop project called Lorna Doom a few years ago, which contained one member of The Body, as D.J. They were obviously new at what they were doing, but it was good. They even sampled a song by The Pixies, which must have been some kind of copyright infringement, as I don’t believe they could afford to pay for its use. But Saturday night, The Body delivered an onslaught of dark, heavy riffs, as if the soundtrack to hell was chopped and screwed. As they make their way back up the East Coast, I’m sure they’ll look back at their Jacksonville date as the warmest.

Overall, I believe the black cold of the night called for a helping of perilous metal such as this: loud and evil. They go together like cookies and milk.

I just wanted to take the time to let you know my current situation. If you keep up with this blog you may have heard a while ago that JaxScene and REAX were going to merge. That news is at least six months old, but is still a desired direction of both REAX and myself. You might have wondered why there are JaxREAX links and our video has a REAX intro at the beginning, well, this is why. You also might have noticed there have not been any new issues of REAX magazine published in a few months. REAX made a decision to take everything online, and to move in a more national direction while still possibly publishing paper twice a year. I have always wanted to take advantage of their desire to grow so I can push the things I post about (bands, friends, clubs, artists, and culture) and expose them to a broader audience. This Friday the site REAX has been working on for the past three months is coming online. Once it launches I will be blogging over there instead of on JaxScene.

So what happens to JaxScene? I decided to leave it to the other contributors to do with as they choose. I just felt they put a lot into it to just shut it down. Let's hope they will keep it going with interesting content. I'm going to the Surf Expo in Orlando this week so I decided to make this my last post. Those pictures will probably be my first posts on REAX to keep up with my live photos, and will be posted to my twitter at http://twitter.com/jaxreax.

The show was a benefit to raise money and awareness for the Got Your Back Movement. If you bought a shirt, Got Your Back provides a shirt or a uniform for someone in need. In some places like Haiti not having proper clothing is the only thing keeping a child from being able to go to school.

Big Dunn wants you to know...

A contributor's situation

My post today isn't about scene, art, or music. I just thought I'd mention a scenario concerning my mother today. I'm pretty bashful about private issues, but she's in a pretty bad spot on the road trying to get to NC from AZ. I am not in the financial position to give her the help she needs anymore. The best I could do is make her a donation blog and a vehicle sticker with the URL so passing motorists can help. I am pretty tapped out; I haven't been out as much and mostly working on Jaxscene from home. It's worth a shot to post as many places as possible and maybe I could raise something for her. It's a bit brief but even thought about a benefit show. If you want to donate, you can do it on the site. Any little thing helps and hopefully one day I can look at the list and return donations.
Thank you everyone!!
