JaxScene Pummelvision

At the site http://pummelvision.com you can generate a video that uses your photos from a source you choose and sets it to music by "Friendly Ghost".
I had done this once before, but I cleaned it up a bit by hiding the more uninteresting photo sets on our Flickr. Check it out. I lawled at he opening image.

PS. JaxScene turned 3 this month.

Surfing the web I found this site http://www.streetartview.com. It contains user submitted street art from around the world from the perspective of Google Street View. I submitted some but was upset to find the ones I loved were not visible at the time google street view photographed Jax. Please take some time out and help submit ones that you know of.

Frog Vs Toad!

I'd like to introduce a local web comic "Frog Vs Toad!", a newer comic created by Birdie who's also behind The Haiku Life comic. Follow the adventures of the seemingly unlikely friends Odin “The Thunder” Wilson, Kelly Mackaye, and Oscar “OG” Gonzales.
I only just started looking at the comic but so far I find it to be funny and enjoy seeing random Jacksonville references. Not to leave out, the characters are great and oddly familiar.

Jaxscene: Things To Do Saturday 2/12/11

Getting back into Jaxscene, it's come to are attention doing "Things To Do" isn't going to be as easy as it once was. We stop doing Jaxscene thinking Facebook had a good enough platform for promoters to get the word out. Well with time people have become lazy. At least on MySpace you can put a flyer of weekly events that never changed and you also had a calendar on your profile page. It was set it and forget it.

This is just an idea I had and the only way it is going to work is if you contribute. We are trying to make this as simple for any promoter as possible. All you have to do is comment. Say Chicken and Whiskey is at Lomax just comment, "Chicken and Whiskey tonight at Lomax." Got info, a link to the flyer or event page add that as well. Not a promoter but you know of an event and want to support it, comment, let people know.

Go ahead and give it a try. I don't know what the permissions are set to on commenting but we will work it out eventually.

Jonathan Shepard's Compilation Reel 2011

I don't know if you guys have seen this I just wanted people to know one of the great talents we have in this city. This video was put together by local director/producer, Jonathan Shepard. Locally Jonathan has done videos for The Con Moto Fest, Crash The Satellites, Pilar, The Sunbears, last years Heart Breakers Ball and you might have seen the recent Jetta Jam commercial by Shangrala guitarist Brian Jerin. Jonathan has put together a compilation reel of his work and I was just blown away that we have someone as talented as him living with us in Jacksonville.

The song in this video is by local band The Sunbears.

Thrilla In Manila A Versus Gallery Project

Taken from the Versus Gallery Facebook
The next Versus project is a open call project for anyone that likes to create. Every month we will be putting together a 50 plus manilla envelope style magazine. We are asking anyone that wants to participate to send in or drop off any number of small things you made that will fit in a 8.5" by 11" manilla envelope. (keeping in mind you will be sharing the envelope with others) you can make a button, a postcard, a print, a photograph, sticker, a poem anything you made by hand. The idea is to make something you can reproduce 50 of. We will have a deadline date and everything submitted by this date will be put in these envelopes and given away in a way not yet decided.

The idea:The idea is to get people to create something that is no bigger the a letter size sheet of paper. if can be anything as long as it can't be crushed. It must be handmade, stickers are acceptable. Everyone turns in these items contributing to a envelope style magazine with everyone contributions. Within these contributions will be articles, interviews or write up based on some of the contributors to help tie the magazine together. It is encouraged that you create something you find beautiful and encouraging to others. It will have no binding.

The benefits: This can be used a way to show people your talents. You get to show your work with people you might never have shown your work with but would like to. People will get a change to physically hold something you made and see how it interacts with their lives rather then just see it on a shelf or wall. If you ever wanted to help contribute to a art project/magazine you can.

How to be part: Create something. The ideal number is to create fifty of this something. You can create 50 unique items if you like, so each package is also one of a kind. If you can not create fifty create what you can. Send it in or drop it off before the set deadline and we will take care of the rest.

When: Thrilla In Manilla will be released (if everything goes as planned) every month for free. How it is released will be determined.

JaxScene 2011

It's been three years and nearly to the day that JaxScene was started by Tom P. Lots of posts for the love of the show coolest things happening in the city and making it better. No matter what JaxScene is to become from here on out, it will never lose the original idea.

This is a growing city and there's twice as many art shows and other event since JaxScene first started; I certainly hope we did our part in letting people know where everything is and showing what happen during the events.

It's been a lesson in the use of cameras, event planning, website design, and scene networking. There's a lot to look forward to. There's more to do and see. There will be more contributors and the possibility of Tom P. coming back.

I've been in contact with column writers, photographers, and people; already covering the scene. They now have a outlet. I plan to have a JaxScene very accessible to anyone who wants to contribute with only a few guidelines. If you're interested yourself, don't hesitate to email me at jaxscenedavid@gmail.com.

I don't want people to think that jaxscene is about a elite few, myself, or just wanting to cover the rare, crunchy, or what is only considered to be cool by a certain group. If something inspiring is happening at a library, I'd like to know. If something different is happening at a venue that typically wouldn't host such an event, that would be great too. I also wouldn't mind seeing more events in support of a cause. Don't worry though, I still like to see the party pics.

The relaunch is no doubt going to be slow at start. I myself still have to barrow cameras to use and still have to rile the new contributors. The reoccurring posts of things to do is still under construction. I want to have more use of technology when it comes to how I do the things to do posts. Nonetheless, I am inspired by the poll numbers.

For right now, I'm just happy with the new design. There will be slight changes for aesthetic effect and the restoration of links to our family blogs on the right.
