David Fixes Our Tumblr Issue

Last month if you went to the Tumblr you would have noticed some of the post above the header. David is one of our contributors that work on the site design and post once in a while. Last week he fixed the header problem and worked on a few things to make it more visually appealing, dates on the side and bigger text.

If you still don't know what the http://jaxscene.tumblr.com/ is we use it as a way to post pictures immediately to the web. It's like twitter but with pictures. So if you see a tornado or a band you can take a picture with your phone and send it to the tumblr and four seconds later its up for everyone to see. Trust me the Tumblr is the jam. I use it if i'm at a show or club and a little crowd is there to let people know they might want to come out. Or if I'm hanging at the bike shop and they make something cool or if someone is trying a stupid human trick. The cool thing about our Tumblr is we gave the Tumblr email to everyone that might want to post, it's mokox966@tumblr.com. With that email you can send photo's, flyers, post links, or just text. Most of us do it strait from our phones. I think right now there is at least seven people that use it religiously. I still can't tell who they come from.

    JaxScene Interview: JT Murphy

Out of all the people I know JT Murphy is the only one I seen just hit the road to make his dreams come true. He travels city to city staying with friends or alone selling his painting in galleries and on the street corner. If it be by van, bus or train JT never stays long in anyone spot, on his myspace he calls New Orleans his home.

If you could pick there year you were born which year would you choose? 1963

    What's a po-boy? It's the same as a hoogie(Philly) and a sandwich (Cali)

How much do you think a hot air ballon cost? Free or cheap if you make it yourself.

Do you ever purposely listen to classical music? All day long.

The last time you dressed up for Halloween what were you? Hunter S. Thompson

When is the last time you tried to get on a exercise program? About 3 years ago.

Do you have a valid passport? Don't need one.

Do you have a favorite constellation? Not really.

Have you ever had to tell a stranger off? Yes, a gas station attendant.

Have you ever had someone fight over you? Never.

Recommended Shows: Manatella @ TSI 6/26/09

I was just trying to think of a better way to support the local music scene. Manatella is playing this week so I thought I would start with them. This isn't saying Jaxscene is even going to be at these shows. I actually have to DJ this night somewhere else. If I wasn't, then yes I probably would go. Don't count on me either I might be busy and not have time to put something up that I want to.

The Infintesmal BBQ and BusStop Mag 1 year @ Shanty Town 6/21/09

It's probably about time you realized what The Infintesmal BBQ are about. Infintesmal is a local record company started by the members of The Memphibians, James and Nicklaus. There first labels release was a compilation with their band and other local bands such as D.M. Waltz, Honey Chamber, Lelyn R. Masters, Tuffy, Lazerstar, Elevators Make Analog, Richelieu, MOTHRAWASHINGTON, American Bowie, Horse Thieves, & Beach Party. The barbecues usually start in the late afternoon, consist of free food, free to cheap entry, and close to ten bands involved with the record label. I've been to two of the three barbecues and so far the turnout has been successful and even though everything is practically free people have been very supportive. Infintesmal has since the beginning of this year had at least six releases and is working on releasing a four album 3 e.p box set with Helios Eye.

Let me tell you this, I had so much fun Djing with Bort on this friday. I believe its the first time reggae has ever been played in The Pearl. It's probably the first time Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone from the Top Gun soundtrack has been played in Jacksonville since the late 80s.

Tonight, from 6-8pm, Native Sun Natural Foods Market is hosting their Healthy Happy Hour at the Baymeadows location, as they do every third Thursday. Free wine, beer and hors d’ oeuvres for those 21 and up. Bold City Brewery reps will be handing out samples of their Limited-Edition “B” Coffee Stout Beer, which is made with Bold Bean Coffee. A portion of the sales from the “B” Coffee Stout Beer will go to the St. Johns Riverkeeper. What a three-fer.

Find more information on tonight's happy hour (did I mention that it's free?), along with details of the other samplings on the Native Sun blog.

    Three Layers Coffee House Before

I really just have a before shot. I've had this picture on my desktop for a while waiting for a good time to post it. What was I thinking, one day I would climb back into the rafters of Three Layers and take an after shot. I took this picture when I was helping put electricity into the building. If you haven't had a chance to see the finished product you should go by Three Layers and have a look.

    The Sinclair 6/13/09

What is a JaxScene contributors favorite thing to do?...........Go to a club or see a band they never seen before. Hold up that isn't funny, just true. This Saturday me and Jenny K got a chance to finally go have a few drinks at The Sinclair. The Sinclair is a new club downtown located at 521 W. Forsyth St. or where the old Voodoo Lounge use to be, and owned by Dang frontman Brennan Hamill. It's good to see them finally open up. I've heard rumors of it opening for the past six months. By my experience the mood of The Sinclair is fancy with no dress code. Fancy cause the way the club is decorated, makes me feel like I should be smoking out of a Sherlock Holmes style pipe. They have three large painting on the walls painted by Jacksonville artist Ryan Strasser and I believe they are all of famous authors. They have dj's but the music is low so you can hear it but still be able to talk comfortably. The upstairs from The Voodoo is still there but will more then likely be open just for the performing bands.

Tough Junkie's "Grab What You Can" Album Release Party @ TSI 6/19

    From the Facebook event page:
Tough Junkie's "Grab What You Can" Album Droppage Party @ Club TSI June 19th, this Friday! You've probably already heard about it a few times now and hopefully you're already planning on going. For those of you who might be sitting on the fence, we got some announcements that should fix that problem:

There will be a community photo, marking the first of many, of the entire crowd taken in front of TSI before the performances. For those of you who've been supporting the scene for so many years make sure you're in the photo.

There will be food, not just snacks but actual food. The food is free and there will be plenty so we got you covered Friday night (vegetarians are covered too but sorry vegans you're on your own).

There will be a dance competition (any kind of dancing) with over $100 in prizes for 3 lucky winners (each winner will get a copy of the new album too!)

There will be a special guest appearance by one of the founders of Hip Hop, not just talking about the local scene but someone who was part of the movement that paved the way for all artists today.

As you can see this is going to be a big night and without giving too much away we wanted to let you know we got your Friday night taken care of. It costs $10 at the door, you get fed and you get to see Tough Junkie throw together the biggest show he's attempted.

If you're already coming spread the word to your friends, the more people we get to the show the more shows we'll have like this in the future. It's time to take this up to the next level folks, be there.

Blueberry picking at Kents Blueberries 6/13/09

Last year, Entertaining U put out a article about picking your own blueberries. By the time me and my family got around to going all the farms were all picked out. If you were to ask my daughter she would say she remembers that as the saddest day of her life, she is only six. Well this year her mom, who also contributes for jaxscene (Jenny K.), decided that she would make sure our daughter didn't miss out this time. So last saturday we went to a u-pick blueberry farm. There are a few extra pictures of a place down the road where you can get honey. The honey was a little pricey but the blueberries were only $3 a pound. There was also a little kid selling lemonade for a quarter.

Jaxscene: This Week 5 years ago

I sometimes wonder if there are people that just find JaxScene for the first time and end up wasting a whole day going through all the older pictures.... probably not. Anyways with that in mind I thought "This week 5 years ago" might be be cool idea. This is the first installment I'll see how it goes.

This week five years ago there was a Art show in Springfield at the building I still currently reside in. Well that is at least till the end of the month. Our building like many of my landlords building(Craig Van horn) is being foreclosed on and is up for auction on the June 24th. Five years ago there was no Pearl or Shanty Town and I'm sure about midnight people started leaving the party to go to The Art Bar. At this time there were six artist and four people in bands in the building. We would all just open our doors, invite a couple bands, friends, and a DJ and leave our current work out for people to see. We really didn't have neighbors so we didn't worry so much about noise.

Shaun Thurston doing tricks in a wheelchair that was found left in our parking lot. you can see Shaun's walls in the back ground. He had his whole place painted in that Shaun Thurton style, he even painted the floors.

Saturday was Fabian's last night Bartending at The Pearl. He's decided to leave our beautiful city and head for colder climate in Denver. After many years working not just at The Pearl but transitioning over from The Art Bar he will be missed.

    Urban Visualization - sketchup

    by David C. Welch

David here, I've been checking out some of the other featured Urban Facelift Project renders from Content Design Group that I first saw at Urban Jacksonville blog.

This concept really struck me; a chance at seeing some of the same abandoned projects and buildings we overlook turned into something beautiful and productive. I would like to think that this visualization, despite the city's bulldozing of these historic buildings (http://www.urbanjacksonville.info/2009/05/18/118-main-street-shoulda-woulda-coulda/), can generate future appeal into revamping downtown.

So I decided to try a whack at it. I went on the Google machine and looked for photos of other old Jacksonville buildings and saved them to start on what would become a very fun project. To sketch easily, but time consuming, I used Google Sketchup.

I would like to see more of these, if you want, make some makeovers yourself and mail me at gamophyte@hotmail.com. I'll feature them in a future post. Google Sketchup tutorials here.
Back the f up see more homie
