More Zombie Walk!

click here to see the full set

Zombie Walk was Sunday and for the most part it was a huge success! There was a great turnout of zombies of all kinds. Soldier zombies, zombie punks, roller-zombies, baby zombies, zombie clowns, zombie Elvis, you name it, it was zombified. We all met at London Bridge Pub and walked around downtown as a giant horrific mass for about an hour. We were careful to stop at all crosswalks though. Heads were definitely turned and while the Jags were busy losing, we were having a blast.

The walk ended at the river and we were told to wait around for the after-party to start. I'll give the organizers a break on this one because it was a last minute change of venue but you just can't keep the people, especially the walking dead, waiting like that. A lot of folks began to trickle out and head home (it was a Sunday afternoon after all) and by the time we made it to TSI, they still weren't quite ready. We did eventually make it inside for a few drinks and a round or two of pool, but then the bands weren't quite ready and there was no sign that the costume contest was about to begin so we left.

Don't get me wrong, the day was awesome and the walk was hella fun. Now we have some lessons learned for the next time. Don't miss out on this event next year and I'm sure all the wrinkles will be ironed out by then.

Be sure to check out Maverick Zombie Jenny's pics as well.

Reverend Horton Heat This Wednesday!

If you've never seen these guys live you owe it to yourself to check it out. They have hands down one of the best shows I've ever seen. It's a high-octane Texas psychobilly freakout that will rock your face off. We're talking slap-bass bones rockabilly ulta-cool here folks!

They'll be playing live this Wednesday at Freebird Live so grab some hair grease and meet me there. I'll be snapping pics for the site so come say hey.

Check out their website or listen to 'em on myspace.

Also playing are Nashville P***y and Reckless Kelly.

The Faint @ Freebird - 10/23/08

In case you missed it, The Faint rocked the house on Thursday night.

Opening was local Floridians, Summerbirds In The Cellar, who mustered a pretty decent crowd and reaction for an opening act.

The Show Is The Rainbow followed and stole the show with their shenanigans. 80's glam wig? Check. Sweaty shirtless heavy-set singer? Check. That big old boy took full advantage of his wireless microphone to get out in the crowd even as far as the upper balcony. Homeboy kept everybody in stitches with the bizarre and inappropriate filth that issued from his mouth, all in good fun.

And then, of course, The Faint brought down the house with their electrified punky dance sex-expolsion. I've been listening to them for a while now but this was my first chance to see them live. Very impressed. I actually thought they would be stranger-looking individuals based on their music style. Lead singer was rocking a Dr. Horrible look with his lab coat and steampunk goggles. The lighting was amazing which is Freebird's best selling point besides the expert sound-mixing. Unfortunately, the place isn't really set up for dancing and that's ultimately what you want to do at a show like that. Still, an awesome time.

Here's all the pics. They're a little blurry but I couldn't use the flash in order to catch all that pretty light.

A Voters Weekend

Free Event Friday 5PM

Starts at 1520 Main, Royal Treatment Records, Zombie Bikes, and Burro Bags. Plenty of bike and other parking. Approachable from Main, next to Chan's Chinese. Pull in through promising blue business enterance sign through construction. Main St on the come back!

Pick up your free Obama/Biden sign. The real kind with wooden stakes. Hammer it in. You would have to be a McCainiac to kick these things.

Browse the record store, bike shop, and bag factory. Meet the management team.

Jay speaks at 6 for 15 minutes and hopefully will be avaialable for any questions you may have. He is running in a tighter than anticipated race. The Obama tidal wave may just help Jay do the impossible. It is hard to believe that an engineer and bio fuel producer, retired military pilot and small business owner is the underdog to an investment banker turned politician. I am not telling you who to vote for, just think that Main Street is not yet saved as predicted at the end of this article. Crenshaw has only missed 3% of his votes and has voted with his party 94% of the time.

At 6:15 ish we take the short walk down the historic dirt alley to some bar called Shantytown where the Return of the City hosts and Shantytown pub sponsor the first keg (AMERICAN).
Reposted from The Urban Core.

Saturday:

Bike To Vote info:
We are just going to try to meet up and try to vote as a group, makes waiting in line and getting out and voting easier. We are going to meet at Zombie Bikes around 3pm (try to be there on time the election office closes at 5pm) and we're going to walk, drive, preferably bike 1.1miles to the Supervisors of Election Office on Monroe and vote. You will need a drivers license or photo id.

Directions from Zombie to Elections Office.

Why Early Vote?

1. By voting early you help out yourself. There will be no need for inordinate amounts of stress if something goes wrong on election day. Car trouble? Lost wallet? Extra work? Well, if you've voted early it's no worse than any other day. And, you avoid the long lines (and oh, will they be long)! This also frees up your time on election day if you must work/pick up the kids/anything at all.

2. By voting early you help other people out. Every election year democrats are forced to go to court to keep voting places open because lines are long and there just never seem to be enough poll workers. Or the republicans seem to have devoted too few resources to large democratic counties. By voting early, you can alleviate some of the strain on your polling place.

3.You can help the campaign out. If you vote early, you can spend election day volunteering (if you have the time). Making calls to GOTV, driving people to polling places, being a poll worker, etc.. Your work on election day will have a huge return on investment.

4.It's a lot harder for corrupt politicians to magic your vote away.

What do I need to vote early?

All you need to do is show up with your current photo and signature ID.

More info on early voting in Duval.

Things to do: Family Edition

I’ve received a few requests from my fellow mommies for a family version of JaxScene. Instead of creating a whole new blog though, we decided on a weekly update listing family friendly (and mostly affordable) events. I’ll do my best to stay up to date for ya'll moms AND dads.

Click the links for more info.

EARLY VOTING!
October 20 - November 2.
Monday - Friday 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Saturday - Sunday 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
I’m listing this because my 5-year-old is really excited about the elections this year. Sure, she doesn’t know what any of it means (her political opinions are as follows: “Barack Obama looks nice” and “I like John McCain’s hair”), but she is ready to “vote” nonetheless for her chosen candidate. Lead by example. It’s never too early to show your kids how to exercise our rights.

JACKSONVILLE ZOO & GARDENS: SPOOKTACULAR 2008
October 24-26, 30, 31 and November 1. 6:30-9:00 p.m.
Non-members $9, Members $8, Kids 2 & under are free.
Also, I think you can purchase discounted tickets at Gate gas stations. I can't find this on the zoo website, but I'm pretty sure I saw a sign at the zoo last weekend advertising this.

MOCA JACKSONVILLE: SUNDAY ARTFUSION
Every Sunday 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m.
Children and accompanying adults are free

JACKSONVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY
There are so many events that happen daily at the libraries around town, I don’t know where to start. Here are just a few.
Main Library, Children's Department:
Magic Tree House Book Club: October 22 3:30 p.m.
Toddler Art: October 25 10:30 a.m.
Saturday Surprise: Haunted Library October 25 2:00 p.m.
Main Library, Teen Lounge:
Octoberfest October 27-31 4:00 p.m.
Movie Madness! The Corpse Bride October 22 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Movie Madness! Monster House October 24 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Sorry these are biased towards the Main Library, but I’ve noticed some of the special events don’t make it to the website. I suggest checking your local branch for a monthly event calendar on paper. The website calendars are worth checking out too, as there are lots of interesting reoccurring events.

TIMES UNION CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS: SYMPHONIC SPOOKTACULAR: LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW
October 26, 3:00 p.m. Admission is $7 per person
"Bring the kids in their favorite costumes and arrive early to play Halloween games before the concert."

BEACHES TOWN CENTER COSTUME CONTEST AND PARADE
904-249-2922 / 200 First Street, Neptune Beach
October 25 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
“This is a free family event for children of all ages. Make-your-own-crafts, games and refreshments provided. Registration for the costume contest starts in the Courtyard at 200 First Street, outside of Shelby’s Coffee Shoppe. The costume parade will walk on the sidewalk though Beaches Town Center with costume contest winners announced following the parade. Prizes will be awarded. Trick or Treating is available for children in all of the participating shops and restaurants in Beaches Town Center during and after the parade.”

ST. AUGUSTINE AMPITHEATER: HAUNTED HAYRIDE & ENCHANTED FOREST HOSTED BY ANASTASIA STATE PARK AND THE FRIENDS OF ANASTASIA STATE PARK
Enchanted Forest: October 24 & 25 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Admission is $4
Haunted Hayride: October 24 & 25 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Admission price not listed, I’m not sure if it is an additional cost.

ALHAMBRA DINNER THEATRE WEEKDAY SCHOOL MATINEE: Once Upon a Time
October 24 10:30 a.m. (doors open at 10:00 a.m.) Admission: $8 + tax
Friday is a Teacher Planning Day, so they're out of school!

MAYOR PEYTON'S BOOK CLUB: ONLINE REGISTRATION NOW OPEN
For Duval kids who are 4 years old by September 1, 2008, and who will be attending kindergarten in the 2009-2010 school year.

Jaxscene Announcement

The people at Jaxscene are going through some updates, so please bear with us. If anyone has an event not listed, email us your info. We now figured out how to add events weeks in advance and have it post at midnight on the day of. So if you send us information on your event, let us know the details and if the date and time repeats. Please send us your event flyers if you have them ready. Jaxscene loves flyers, Jacksonville is going to be a better place if you make them. It lets us know you that care about your event more than a plain and simple link to your myspace page.

What you must know is that Jaxscene wants to keep a level of cool. Which means if you are a top 40s night/band/dj, or if your club has a dress code, or if you have a club with employed dancers, or an event solely to sell a house or property - we won't post it. If you’re a local blog send us the link. If you are working on a good cause or you’re doing something for charity, tell us about it, include a flyer if you can. Don't know anyone to do a flyer, pay us for our time and we will do it. We would do it for free but the site already takes up most of our free time. We just think it's lame when we put more effort to get your event noticed then you do. We have not posted a few events because of that reason. I know a lot of people do have Myspace, your only limited by the number of friends you have. Everyone has the internet or should. Jaxscene is very accessible, on October 3rd we had 389 views on Jaxscene's front page and 7528 views on our Flickr page (way to go Art Walk), in one day. Thanks other blogs for blogging us.

If you want Jaxscene at your event please let us know if we are welcome, and let us know the details. Let us know if you’d like us to take pictures and/or video. We go to as many events as we can but are more inclined if we are asked. If you have an event and would like for us to promote it by giving away free tickets, shirts, posters, etc., let us know.

Another thing were working on is the Jaxscene Museum. We don't know where it is going to go, but we are starting it in hopes to build hype and love for being a part of this city.

Our email is jaxscene@yahoo.com. If there is a reason you like Jaxscene and want to tell us more about it, it might encourage us to do more of what it is you like, let us know.
