For News Sake.

The Pearl met with the Fire Marshall this week about renewing their capacity. Last Thursday The Pearl believed they were following the rules of their capacity but it turned out the Fire Marshall no longer allows a capacity for the outside. The Pearl was unaware of this and were including their outside capacity given to them when they open in the total. You are allowed to go outside but they only do capacity for the club as one entity. Which means you don't have a total outside capacity and an inside capacity anymore. I'm thinking this is a new law. The Pearl was unaware and never tried to update their inside capacity. The Pearl had a meeting with the Fire Marshall and had to remodel a bit - they cut down all the trees (just kidding), but I was told they have everything taken care of and their capacity is updated to the changes. They will be checking the number as people enter to prevent future shut downs.

In other news last week The Pearl and Eclipse received complaints to 911. I was at Eclipse when the Fire Marshall arrived and the Fire Marshall said they were fine. But it seems to me someone is getting off on making calls to the Fire Marshall forcing the clubs and their patrons to be hassled for a head count. Don't get me wrong I'm totally for club safety. But I think it's silly for a couple reasons: First, someone is making fake calls to 911 just to cause trouble. And then also that you can open a club and a year down the road the law changes then that club has to change after all that the owners invested thinking this is my occupancy, this is what I have to work with, I can have a back patio, so can I put up christmas lights, this is a historic building that has been here for a hundred years and since I open but now since Joe Enviousclubowner/ Christian Parent is complaining I have to widen the doorways a half inch on each side or I'm getting shut down. Club owners need news letters.

I don't know if this is true but I heard that any club that opens on or after January 1, 2009, and that doesn't have overhead fire sprinklers, their capacity is only allowed to be 99 people tops no matter how big it is. That is just one more thing keeping people with dreams from being club owners unless they have a extra 20 grand for a sprinkler system. Ending, once again I just heard the 99 capacity thing, someone tell me if I'm wrong. I love firemen, I don't won't to burn up in a building, but will I ever get to see a band at a small club for under $5. Is it possible to be safe now without shutting a club down or keeping them from opening.

I just wanted to say that. With that said there was a club fire in Bangkok, Thialand that killed 54 people and injured 100 during last night's New Years Celebration.

Liam's (IamHappenstance) Apartment Broken Into

Yesterday Liam, the town paparazzi, a Jaxscene contributor, and owner of the blog Iamhappenstance had his house broken into and his camera and computer stolen. From his post it sounds like he is calling it quits. This is going to be a loss for all those who enjoyed seeing his photographs of the places we couldn't always go to. For more info check out his blog or click on the picture for the link.

Before you hibernate for the rest of the year...

There are a few end of the year events that are a must.

This Friday @ Fuel is a 40+ artist Joe Van Dyke show called Art Magic.

This Saturday is the BBB Complex Art Show. Don't let the name fool you i think of something new every week. It is the Burro Bags/ Zombie Bikes/ Royal Treatment Shop. You know next to Chan's. They are trying to raise money so they can stay there for another year. I have been stopping by all week and the Burro kids have been sewing bags created by different artists for the show. People have been bringing in painted bike frames for the show. And everyone is welcome, the people at the shop are some of the best people I've ever meet. You don't have to ride a bike, have a record player, or be into DYI. Even though all these are a plus, everyone is welcome so come out.

Thursday 12/25 The Eclipse Christmas Party. There are a couple things I will say The Eclipse owns in this town, 1) the indie rock dance night and 2) the end of the year Christmas party. I have been for the past three years and every year I have said to myself, "This is the best show of the year." Come for the music, stay for the people.

New Year's Eve TSI's Silver and Gold Ball. I know New Year's Eve is a big night for all Jacksonville's clubs, but I have to say TSI has the recipe for doing this night right. It is a must for starting your new year on the right foot.

Sorry if I missed anything, and these are only the opinions of one JaxScene contributor. Maybe I should have called it tom p.'s end of the year event picks.

Updates Or Lack There of And Way To Go Halftone Def

First off I want to say sorry there is no Things To Do post for today. I usually set it up at the beginning of the month so it auto updates every day so I don't have to spend a hour a day devoted to JaxScene I just haven't gotten around to it. With that if anyone has a event send it now otherwise well......you know. Send it to jaxscene@yahoo.com .

Everyone has their favorite website, mine just happens to be omgposters.com. I pretty much go on there to find limited edition art posters by big wigs like Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Faile and Kaws that are just released. I bought four posters off the site yesterday. Well today was a surprise, a Jacksonville company Halftone Def Studios has a limited edition 74 Soundsystem poster up for sale. It is 18"x24" limited to 50 only $15. Way to go guys. Check out their online store to see their other posters for sale. They still have some Partisan The Sea posters for only $20.

JAXSCENE INTERVIEW: Jamie Armstrong

Jamie is a film and television grad who enjoys physical activities, performing improv, and working on projects.

What was the last thing you did that you felt healthy about?
Jamie: I rode my bike to downtown and back, which is anywhere between 10-15 miles... Zach's odometer was f*** up, so I'm not sure.

Make up a law or take away a law to make America a better place.
Jamie: Hmmm. Um. My first answer is that I would have a 250 dollar fine for not using your turn signal. Thinking of a trip I took to Ft. Lauderdale.

Do you collect anything?
Jamie: yeah actually, um... well I collect books and DVDs... that's it really. Though... hahaha... I used to collect salt shakers.

Have you ever made a desperate attempt to get back someone you love?
Jamie: No. (loud maniacal laughter)

Dolphins. Man's best friend of the sea? Poseidon's clever legionnaires? Or food?
Jamie: I've petted one once in high school, and I felt the love... I'm serious.

What's your best subject of study now or from school?
Jamie: It was improvisational acting and social political issues. Which led me to Mad Cowford Improv.

What might a modern pirate flag feature?
Jamie: Oil drums and dollar signs ha ha ha.

Finish the fallowing sentence with a rhyme:
Jamie: Every time I stop and catch a glance at that chair, I wonder why there's a sign on it, that reads beware.

Invent a surprisingly good but not obvious ice bream flavor.
Jamie: ...Your mom.
David: You're right, that is surprisingly good.

Worst costume you saw this past Halloween? Then best.
Jamie: Worst, there was this guy dressed as himself. Best, was there four dudes dressed as Ghostbusters, but had vacuums for packs.
David: LOL shameless plug:My myspace ghostbuster gallery.

Interview by David. All interviews are random questions in the areas of bizarre, funny, serious, or abstract. Interviewees are randomly selected, usually out around town. If you want to be interviewed hit me up when you see me.
