Suspended JaxScene - Local blog acquisition?

It's no secret, this site is asleep. Yet again. But hey, so many things I like in Jax tend to disappear; popup galleries, awesome bars, and places I like to eat.

I am asked about it, and I say for myself that I am busy with personal projects and work, as well, Tom P. now runs http://unibrowmagazine.blogspot.com/. The only way I could think to restart this despite how hard it is to go get the content without a camera, is unifying with other local blogs. Obviously blogs that are drifting by and don't stand as strong on their own. They would have a log in here and start drumming up content, and as a whole work together.

Comment with your thoughts... I might be able to "buy out" other blogs with funds from a JaxScene  http://www.kickstarter.com/  page. With a awesome enough video, we might be able to get money for cameras for on location event photography.

• ABOVE: Local band SUNBEARS finished wrapping up the shooting of their latest music video for their single "Give Love A Try", last First Fridays in Five Points. People were openly invited to attend and be apart of a non-permitted "guerrilla" video shoot. Looking forward to seeing it. Check back here for photos from that event by Tom P.
• Speaking of music videos, Jack Diablo and EU presents Jacksonville Music Video Revival, a calling for videos. "The JMVR began last year as a pet project of Jack Diablo and EU Jacksonville with the intended purpose of showcasing local filmmaking and musical talent and the hopes of stimulating a "revival" of the art from here in Jacksonville. Many music videos have been made since then and we are pleased to offer an outlet for them to be seen by the public.". Read this post for more info and how to get involved. I think this is a push in a awesome art direction. Last Year's interview with Jack on Urban Jacksonville. Here's pictures by Tom P. from a previous JMVR night, August 2010.
• www.mizunousa.com created an ad about running featuring music from local band Crash the Satellites, directed by Patrick Barry. It was pretty cool and a great choice of song. I tried to name the recognizable places the runner, Rick Patterson, was at in Jacksonville. By the way Rick, your arms will get too warn out running that way.
• Terriblerentersinjax.com continues posting and I got to say it's sort of my guilty pleasure. It's enticing like reality TV in the way that you get to hear some dirt at the expense of someone else, whether warranted or not. It's drawn controversy for posting such raw info on bad renters, including pictures of them and the damages they've caused. They have taken criticism that they're being one sided, but it's more of a place for these landlords to blow off some steam from cases that ended unsatisfactorily. A place for renters to blow off steam has been a suggestion and bringing this resulting post.
• Not too long after the new local bicycling advocacy group; The Jacksonville Bicycle Coalition. site went live came a stream of posts about bike riders being struck by vehicles. Some being hit and runs and most leaving the rider seriously injured. This post highlights some of these recent incidences. Visit to read more and get involved where you can to make it safer to ride in Jax.
• "Words That Make Your Heart Tingle", a post on Jax Underbelly blog about feedback from fans concerning the former venue Underbelly's in five points. Who knew it meant this much. Well, lets get Underbelly 2 going!!
• Birdie, the creator of some local web comics we love at JaxScene is taking a break, or even a farewell, not too long after a revamping of his comic Frog VS Toad. I enjoyed the new look of the characters and hopefully he will get back into it. But everyone's got to stop and refocus. We know this all to well.
• Art: BEAST EVERY WEEK & Fly's Tie Project.

There is a project to revamp and deliciousify 5 Points Theatre restoring it to it's former glory and then some. • A Help Save Five Points Coffee Shop Facebook event was started to mobilize a effort to help the shop to stay open despite unforeseen expenses threatening to close the place down. Inside you'll fine what ideas they are collaborating on as far as donations and a August 28th event with live music. to get involved contact them or visit the Facebook page link above. • Bike Jax Blog posted a article showcasing a new local bicycling advocacy group; The Jacksonville Bicycle Coalition."Fighting for Our Right-of-Way: A Duval-based order advocating for the rights of cyclists. If these mean streets are wearing you down, join us. United WE make a difference."
• Just in: The bike club SkidMarks started a mobile on site bike repair service. Text your name and number or call 458-SKID. 6 members are ready to help as late as 3am. It's part of a on going project for on the spot help with more to come.
• Posted on Money Jungle Safari blog; 'G. Jerome Jones on Hip-Hop', touching on some history as well as the local hiphop scene resources that helped it grow.
• Jacksonville Suns starting pitcher Graham Taylor slide fail on YouTube. Lols.
  
• I'm happy to see new user posts on our JaxScene Tumblr Page. Join in on the fun, visit the link to see what email you send your photo to. Post some cell pics from events you're at or what you're seeing around town.

Jaxscene Tumblr Reboot

In the past I've loved the 50+ photos submitted to our Tumblr feed, live from people hanging out and around the scene. In it's popular days we saw on the moment live shows, obscure hangouts, traffic accidents, cool street art, personal blurbs from some of our fans, and event breaking news. And it got interesting what else we got because it's totally anonymous and anyone can post. The only reason such a neat idea fell out, was that it was spammed constantly by bots. Because to submit to our Tumblr live on the spot, you would send it to our email listed in plain text on the right side of our Tumblr page, which was easily read by spam bots.
Not realizing that having the email listed as a image would stop this, I regenerated an email and again listed it as text. I eventually gave up and buried it.

Now this time, it's back up and the email is a image. All posts will be moderated for nudity or obviously abusive posts. So now it's over to you. Post what's going on. It can be text, photo, even video. Posts will be live right on the column to the right on this site.

0mg Jaxscene sucks. A self hate meme post. Plus news!

Good day, David W. here. As you may see there are large gaps to no posts of things to do as well as photo posts. This is because I suck bawls and I think Tom P. is over it once again, and I can't blame him. It's all hand coded and I'm sure he thought I would have the more automated system done by now. Which was starting to require a coding level I'm not familiar with. I will need some more time and help for that. As for the regular hand written things to do, it may just be on primary days plus recommended events and fliers.

I really wanted this to work out, I wanted to keep this going. But I can also say that there are at least 5 people who said they want to contribute and never did. That's getting old fast. Maybe it's because there's not actually anything going on anymore. I did see a fire show that melted my face though, and no one took pictures.

• Two of Five Point's best newer venues; Lomax Lodge and Underbelly, will be forced to close shop and move due to neighborhood noise complaints. You can read more with the Folio Weekly article online. I hope there is some news on how we can make the situation better for them. You should definitely show them some love.
• Madeleine of 'Art Isn't Rocket Science' blog post some brilliant new large-scale drawings. I recommend clicking them to embiggen. As well ToyCrusher creates the "CROMS"; Spray paint, oil, & acrylic on a wooden box. It's says sweet stash all over it. Not literally. Calm down.
• A new FaceBook page called  Isawyou Jacksonville was created in the theme of Folio Weekly's I saw you section, so you can hook up some love. You can have them post so you can stay anonymous.
• Tony of TheUrbanCoreDotCom posts an article about his new move in joining the keymer group specializing in public relations. He loves this place and strives to make it better.
• BusstopMag.com posts a video of Jacksonville originating skater Nick Blanco in honor of his 20th birthday.

• I'd like to mention Content Design Group's latest Urban Facelift Project #15. The Urban Facelift Project is where they take photos of desolate or non functioning buildings in Jacksonville and graphically mock them up to show a concept of what they can be. I'm a geek for this stuff so a long while back I submitted one of my own to them.

For News Sake.

The Pearl met with the Fire Marshall this week about renewing their capacity. Last Thursday The Pearl believed they were following the rules of their capacity but it turned out the Fire Marshall no longer allows a capacity for the outside. The Pearl was unaware of this and were including their outside capacity given to them when they open in the total. You are allowed to go outside but they only do capacity for the club as one entity. Which means you don't have a total outside capacity and an inside capacity anymore. I'm thinking this is a new law. The Pearl was unaware and never tried to update their inside capacity. The Pearl had a meeting with the Fire Marshall and had to remodel a bit - they cut down all the trees (just kidding), but I was told they have everything taken care of and their capacity is updated to the changes. They will be checking the number as people enter to prevent future shut downs.

In other news last week The Pearl and Eclipse received complaints to 911. I was at Eclipse when the Fire Marshall arrived and the Fire Marshall said they were fine. But it seems to me someone is getting off on making calls to the Fire Marshall forcing the clubs and their patrons to be hassled for a head count. Don't get me wrong I'm totally for club safety. But I think it's silly for a couple reasons: First, someone is making fake calls to 911 just to cause trouble. And then also that you can open a club and a year down the road the law changes then that club has to change after all that the owners invested thinking this is my occupancy, this is what I have to work with, I can have a back patio, so can I put up christmas lights, this is a historic building that has been here for a hundred years and since I open but now since Joe Enviousclubowner/ Christian Parent is complaining I have to widen the doorways a half inch on each side or I'm getting shut down. Club owners need news letters.

I don't know if this is true but I heard that any club that opens on or after January 1, 2009, and that doesn't have overhead fire sprinklers, their capacity is only allowed to be 99 people tops no matter how big it is. That is just one more thing keeping people with dreams from being club owners unless they have a extra 20 grand for a sprinkler system. Ending, once again I just heard the 99 capacity thing, someone tell me if I'm wrong. I love firemen, I don't won't to burn up in a building, but will I ever get to see a band at a small club for under $5. Is it possible to be safe now without shutting a club down or keeping them from opening.

I just wanted to say that. With that said there was a club fire in Bangkok, Thialand that killed 54 people and injured 100 during last night's New Years Celebration.

Christmas News

First off i hope you had a good christmas. Club news........

@ Eclipse if you want to see Christmas On Mars @ Eclipse it starts @ 9pm then the bands start, then dance music.

If your going to The Pearl the new way they will handle their nights is first come first serve till they reach capacity, after that you will have have wait at the door till someone leaves. No more total shut downs.

If you don't go out to these places their are others check out things to do. have a good night drive safe.

The Pearl Closed Till..........?

Of course some of you have heard The Pearl got raided last night by D.A.R.T and COJ city inspectors last night around 12:30am.

I am the DJ at the pearl on thursday and saturday night and yes i was DJing last night when this happened.

let me clear a few things up.

1) there was NO drugs found nor are we known to have such items.
2) they did find minor code violations while inspecting the club, but nothing that would put anybody in harm’s way
3) we are closed until further notice but of course hope to be open asap.

Please look at the Pearl’s myspace for updates. I am the number 3 friend on their page and if you have any questions, I will be more than happy to answer anything i can.

we can not speculate on why we or anybody else was chosen for this.

To everyone who has posted their love and appreciation for The Pearl I want to thank you personally. Yes we were raided last night. By DART, ABT, the Fire Marshall, building code enforcement and JSO. We have been shut down for reasons of building code violations.

Our owner has talked with DART today to find that The Pearl was being watched for two weeks by DART agents coming into the bar. DART could not give our owner evidence showing that they found ANYTHING illegal happening at our club. DART proceeded to raid us even after 2 weeks of investigation.

I personally had contacted ABT 5 weeks ago about having an officer come to the club and re-train my staff (because I have some new security staff, and laws change). I never received a call back. I had called at least once each week to see about getting someone to come out. Only to find out last night from an ABT officer that they were holding off on calling me back so that they could proceed with this raid.

As far as the code violations we will be working on correcting those as soon as possible. The Owner has spent all day downtown today trying to get things taken care of with the city so we can re-open. We will let everyone know when that will be happening. Thank all of you who are supporting us in this. It is a very unfortunate event.

I guess that i don’t really know where to start, but
the facts are this:
neither myself nor my club are involved in drugs or
condone them in any way.
after talking to the dart officials (at length today) i was
informed that they had been watching my bar for 2
weeks before this raid, and NOT ONCE found any
illegal activity… and last night, found NO DRUGS,
and did not and have not witnessed any of my staff
disobeying ANY laws.
they did in fact, catch 2 underagers sneaking alcohol,
arrested them, and admitted that my staff did not
serve them.
we were shut down anyway…
why?
because of extension cords, gfi outlets, locked
electrical panels (hello, crack-head city) a fire
extinguisher that was charged but needed updating,
an unpermitted water heater…. well, you get the point.
this is a permitting issue,
i live in the neighborhood where the code officers drive
by everyday, and god-forbid they find something
wrong, you’re gonna pay.
i’m used to that.
i’m used to the notices, and the code officers, and all
i try to do is keep up with the upkeep of a 100-year
building that i have worked so hard to renovate and
make a special place for the whole neighborhood.
but what i am not used to
is the actions that were displayed by MY city
last night…
a city that i was born and raised in, and have done
everything in my power to make a BETTER place.
i can say from my heart
that i try to live to be the best person that i can be,
i’ve made mistakes in the past, but i can look in the
mirror every morning and like myself, because i know
what my values are and i love my family and my job
and i believe in the good in people.
today has been hard because i got to see (again) the
uglyness that rears its head at times…
and oh well.
thats life.
