JAXSCENE INTERVIEW: Jamie Armstrong

Jamie is a film and television grad who enjoys physical activities, performing improv, and working on projects.

What was the last thing you did that you felt healthy about?
Jamie: I rode my bike to downtown and back, which is anywhere between 10-15 miles... Zach's odometer was f*** up, so I'm not sure.

Make up a law or take away a law to make America a better place.
Jamie: Hmmm. Um. My first answer is that I would have a 250 dollar fine for not using your turn signal. Thinking of a trip I took to Ft. Lauderdale.

Do you collect anything?
Jamie: yeah actually, um... well I collect books and DVDs... that's it really. Though... hahaha... I used to collect salt shakers.

Have you ever made a desperate attempt to get back someone you love?
Jamie: No. (loud maniacal laughter)

Dolphins. Man's best friend of the sea? Poseidon's clever legionnaires? Or food?
Jamie: I've petted one once in high school, and I felt the love... I'm serious.

What's your best subject of study now or from school?
Jamie: It was improvisational acting and social political issues. Which led me to Mad Cowford Improv.

What might a modern pirate flag feature?
Jamie: Oil drums and dollar signs ha ha ha.

Finish the fallowing sentence with a rhyme:
Jamie: Every time I stop and catch a glance at that chair, I wonder why there's a sign on it, that reads beware.

Invent a surprisingly good but not obvious ice bream flavor.
Jamie: ...Your mom.
David: You're right, that is surprisingly good.

Worst costume you saw this past Halloween? Then best.
Jamie: Worst, there was this guy dressed as himself. Best, was there four dudes dressed as Ghostbusters, but had vacuums for packs.
David: LOL shameless plug:My myspace ghostbuster gallery.

Interview by David. All interviews are random questions in the areas of bizarre, funny, serious, or abstract. Interviewees are randomly selected, usually out around town. If you want to be interviewed hit me up when you see me.

Van Horn Update

A few weeks ago I posted about my landlord not paying the water bill. Since then Fox 30 did a news story on it. I think this story is so terrible as far as name bashing and I normally would feel awful posting it. The thing is it directly effects me, I'm going to have to move. Now the water bill is being paid for by one of my neighbors, but we don't know how long it will be before the bank forecloses on the building. I probably won't get another chance to mention this so I will say that as a community I like Springfield. Seems like Craig has played some part in everything bad that has happened here. I have lived here for almost 6 years and have raised a daughter here. I haven't had any trouble from the outside neighbors and only had problems with one tenant who tried to break in my house and kill me and my family. I wish there were more stores within walking/biking distance and I think some of the rent rates are ridiculous because this isn't the beach. But other than that, I hope Springfield continues to build into a nice community. There are some cool people that live here.
Back to the story here is an update.

Greater Jacksonville Roller Derby Spanksgiving 11/22/08

This Saturday Jenny and I decided to go to a roller derby match. For the past two years we had neighbors who are roller derby girls and we always meant to go watch them, but never did until now. Jacksonville has two roller derby teams the Jacksonville Roller Girls and the Greater Jacksonville Roller Derby. We went to see the Greater Jacksonville Roller Derby a/k/a the Jax Heart Attacks.
If any of you are old enough you might remember when roller derby was on tv. If you haven't seen it was basically pro wrestling with skates and a circle track. I think it might have even been fake. Well the basics are still the same but the tracks are not inclined, your not allowed to push, punch, kick, pull hair, trip or anything like that. You basically can only body check from the waist to below the head and use your skating skills. But don't think that makes it weak, there are a lot of girls that will still do it and there are a lot of penalties.
I basically thought the match was pretty exciting and couldn't stop thinking, "those girls are tough". My favorite player is the jammer. The jammer is the person who scores points by being in front of the other teams' jammer and makes it around the track without getting knocked out of bounds. You can tell who she is by the star on her helmet. A jammer scores points based on how many of the other teams' players they pass. I'm not going to get all into the rules, but I put a video link at the end of the post if you care. I can also be wrong on some of this so if you know, correct me. But I did think the match was really exciting and would be willing to go again.
Sorry about the choppy clip fades in the video, it took me close to four hours to put together. And right now I don't feel like redoing it.

First off, thanks to everybody who has supported the new site so far. We've had over 70 people sign up in out first week! If you haven't checked it out yet, you need to head on over and have a look. Take special note of the fresh new network badge on the sidebar!

There's a lot going on, especially for how new it is. You can join one of several groups or start your own to get people involved in your cause. You can post your own events just like here on JaxScene and watch your friends and neighbors RSVP. Let the JaxScene Social Network be your portal to everything that happens in Jacksonville. Steamworks Fridays

Every now and then people send me flyers to post and most of the time I put them up. Unless it's a wet t-shirt, foam party, best teen ass thing. Yesterday I got one from Steamworks. I have a few friends that go and work at Steamworks, I personally have never been but I want to go. I get this flyer for a friday which is the same night I dj @ The Pearl. I have to admit this is sort of hard for me. Promote another possibly competing night. I got a question, would you do it? Would they do it? I don't know, support your friends, right. I'm thankful they even want to be on Jaxscene. So now just so you know, if we know about it and it's the kind of thing we like we will put it up. In no way am I bashing Steamworks. This is just an example that we will unbiasly support the scene.

The JaxScene Yearbook 2008

Well today is the first day I started putting it together. It's going to be awesome so get excited. I'm thinking hard cover, cheesy yearbook style layouts, things that happen this year, two option of color or black and white, 100 pages. I will need to do a few personal interviews with some people so don't be scared when I email you. I don't know if I should do the back page ads, wishes, or friends space. I just feel it make a yearbook feel like a yearbook and its a good way for outsiders to say something. Jaxscene has never been about money so if anyone come up with a good way to do it or thinks we should not do it or if anyone has any good ideas feel free to comment or email.

Coming Soon: Quintron and Miss Pussycat @ Jack Rabbits

When I get bored I have this little thing I like to do to pass the time. Check out what bands are coming to town and google the ones I've never heard of before. Most of the time what I find is met with an unenthusiastic sigh, but sometimes I get all giddy and excited and perform silly little celebratory dances.

My latest Google/Wikipedia exploration was one of those times that I am grateful to work more or less on my own because the aforementioned celebratory dancing was particularly embarassing. And that, my friends, is because Quintron and Miss Pussycat are coming to Jacksonville next week.

I have absoultely no idea what this New Orleans married duo sound like and neither do I care. For that is because Mr. Quintron invents and plays his own instruments that light up, move about, make strange sounds and look like cars. Srsly. Ooh, and there might be puppets too!

Check out this excerpt via Wikipedia:
Mr. Quintron is a multi-instrumental one-man-band. During performances, Mr. Quintron utilizes a custom-made Hammond organ/Fender Rhodes synthesizer combo which he has had custom outfitted to resemble the body of a car, complete with working headlights and a license plate which reads “Mr. Q”. Mr. Quintron is often accompanied by The Drum Buddy, a rotating, light-activated analog synthesizer, one of many which he has created and manufactured himself. Mr. Quintron frequently plays multiple instruments simultaneously, the Hammond organ acting as his primary instrument, and the Fender Rhodes supplying bass lines. He can often be seen keeping time on a hi-hat with one foot while toggling between a volume and wah-wah pedal with the other. Mr. Quintron is regularly accompanied by his wife Miss Pussycat, who sings backup and plays maracas.

Can you say "Aw hell yeah!"? I sure can.

So what you should do on Tuesday is go to Anomaly for Craft Night where you can make an affordable Christmas gift during these tough economic times and then head on over to Jack Rabbits to have your mind blown out your ear-holes!

The way the two members sing vocals together make up for a solid unique sound. Most of the time they sing high but in harmony and often singing different some what dueling lyrics.

Introducing the JaxScene Social Network!

As mentioned by Tom, I've created a social networking site to expand the community-building vision he established with JaxScene.

Think MySpace or Facebook but far more personal and with a local focus. Once you sign up (it's FREE btw), you can create a profile, upload pics and videos, add events, join groups, participate in and create discussions, etc. I think it is a really cool way to bring everyone together and provide a great opportunity to meet like-mided people.

But it only works if you participate. There are lots of great blogs and sites popping up, but this one is unique in that you can make your own mark on it. You can promote the things that fire you up and get the rest of the city involved in your cause.

We are still experimenting with it and tweaking the design so be patient with us as we perfect it, but by all means, head on over and get involved!

There is a featured discussion on how we can make JacScene better but feel free to start your own thread.

Things In The Works For JaxScene

I've been postponing talking about things JaxScene is thinking of doing that way if we are still thinking them in a month then they must be alright ideas.

The first one and the big one is the 2008 JaxScene yearbook. Hardcopy available online through Lulu.com. It will be set up like a cheesy yearbook, but it will have a lot of the pictures from JaxScene from this year, the event, bands, and happenings. I will need to do spotlight interviews. but yeah that is one idea. It would make a awesome coffee table book.

The second one is a link for out of towners that come to Jaxscene trying to find things to do. Well you click this link and if offers all these discounts for out of towners. This is a tourist city, say you have a business and would like to offer these people a discount this link will show the discount you willing to offer them. Can you imagine if all city's did this? say you go to Seattle and you have this list that says if I eat here and show my out of state license I get 10% off, or if I go to this club I get in free and my first beer is on the house, 15% off the order of a pizza. That would be awesome you would be able to travel for cheaper. Not to mention you will think this city is rad, I love this place. You can write their name down that way they can only use the discount once. This link is going up soon, if anyone want to get in on it just email me what you would offer and it will go on the list. More detail will be provided once the list is up.

The third things is JaxScene contributor Jack Diablo has been working on a forum, make JaxScene yours, you can start discussions, post your pictures, video, events. Don't wait for us to do it. Do you own interviews. It's still in the works but check it out here.

You may know that I have been designated the "Family Edition" contributor, and I absolutely believe this to be a family issue. Here at Jaxscene we try not to get too political - yes, I know we photographed both Barack Obama rallies but not John McCain or Sarah Palin's - so by that I mean we don't put our opinions out there. Tom and I decided this was a very important issue to us and I wish I had said more about it before November 4. We are not gay but we're an unmarried couple, and it looks like the passage of Amendment 2 could have a negative effect on us in the future. More importantly than that though, I think it's absolutely disgraceful that a majority of voters would choose to deny marriage to anyone period. In my opinion, the passage of both Prop 8 & Amendment 2 reflects a discriminatory society that we're now living in. And that makes me pretty sad.

Special (and very eloquent) comment by Keith Olberman on MSNBC:

And this next passage is a quote from Tony Allegretti's friend Rebecca, where she discusses some reasons for voting No on 2 (copied from his blog, The Urban Core). She says it way better than I ever could:

"Mainly this law would make it so that families, domestic partnerships, etc., that currently have benefits such as legal rights and allowing each other to be covered on health insurance would be eliminated. If passed, it will create a huge strain on our legal system when the thousands of people who lost benefits sue the state. It does nothing to "protect marriage," as Florida law already states that marriage must be between a man and a woman.

Beyond that, as other states are passing laws that give more rights to families who choose not to be married, including same-sex marriage laws, Florida will go against this trend if this law should pass, making us appear as a "backwoods" type of state. A state that has passed a similar law is Kentucky. States that have passed the opposite law, giving more rights to families, are Massachusetts and New York.

It is a mean-spirited and discriminatory amendment that all Florida voters will be voting on this coming Presidential Election, Nov. 4th, 2008.

We should all join together to oppose stripping away existing employee benefits - like health care - while forever barring the passage of future measures that could help families.

My personal feeling is that this law penalizes any family that chooses not to join themselves by marriage. I support anyone who wants to join together as a family unit, to care for and support one another, and I don't feel that love has to be registered with the government at the county courthouse to be valid. Love and families are concepts that supercede government and laws, and government stating that only certain people can be in love is a Big-Brother, Orwellian type of scary. Each person may choose who they love without government permission, in my opinion. If you disagree with my personal opinion, please vote NO on 2 based on the legal ramifications I discussed initially."

I hope we didn't upset too many readers by posting this. I just wish we could all live our own personal lives, and leave the government/church out of it. Especially when love is involved. Sorry to get a bit cheesy, but to quote those Liverpool boys, sometimes, "all you (we) need is love," ya'll.

I had never heard of Phosporescent until the day of the show when a friend of mine called and asked if I was going. So naturally I got online and tried to find something by them to listen to. I listened to the song "Right Now I Am A Roaming" a Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds cover. Within 5 seconds I was sold, they remind me a lot of the Palace Brothers. There seemed to be a few out of towners, and a lot of fans from Jacksonville which made me wonder why this was the first time hearing them. During one song this kid starting doing some sort of Irish jig. But I'm glad I did decide to go out and see Phosporescent, happy birthday Brendan. This is a video of a song they did in there encore set.
