Things to do: Family Edition

I’ve received a few requests from my fellow mommies for a family version of JaxScene. Instead of creating a whole new blog though, we decided on a weekly update listing family friendly (and mostly affordable) events. I’ll do my best to stay up to date for ya'll moms AND dads.

Click the links for more info.

EARLY VOTING!
October 20 - November 2.
Monday - Friday 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Saturday - Sunday 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
I’m listing this because my 5-year-old is really excited about the elections this year. Sure, she doesn’t know what any of it means (her political opinions are as follows: “Barack Obama looks nice” and “I like John McCain’s hair”), but she is ready to “vote” nonetheless for her chosen candidate. Lead by example. It’s never too early to show your kids how to exercise our rights.

JACKSONVILLE ZOO & GARDENS: SPOOKTACULAR 2008
October 24-26, 30, 31 and November 1. 6:30-9:00 p.m.
Non-members $9, Members $8, Kids 2 & under are free.
Also, I think you can purchase discounted tickets at Gate gas stations. I can't find this on the zoo website, but I'm pretty sure I saw a sign at the zoo last weekend advertising this.

MOCA JACKSONVILLE: SUNDAY ARTFUSION
Every Sunday 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m.
Children and accompanying adults are free

JACKSONVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY
There are so many events that happen daily at the libraries around town, I don’t know where to start. Here are just a few.
Main Library, Children's Department:
Magic Tree House Book Club: October 22 3:30 p.m.
Toddler Art: October 25 10:30 a.m.
Saturday Surprise: Haunted Library October 25 2:00 p.m.
Main Library, Teen Lounge:
Octoberfest October 27-31 4:00 p.m.
Movie Madness! The Corpse Bride October 22 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Movie Madness! Monster House October 24 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Sorry these are biased towards the Main Library, but I’ve noticed some of the special events don’t make it to the website. I suggest checking your local branch for a monthly event calendar on paper. The website calendars are worth checking out too, as there are lots of interesting reoccurring events.

TIMES UNION CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS: SYMPHONIC SPOOKTACULAR: LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW
October 26, 3:00 p.m. Admission is $7 per person
"Bring the kids in their favorite costumes and arrive early to play Halloween games before the concert."

BEACHES TOWN CENTER COSTUME CONTEST AND PARADE
904-249-2922 / 200 First Street, Neptune Beach
October 25 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
“This is a free family event for children of all ages. Make-your-own-crafts, games and refreshments provided. Registration for the costume contest starts in the Courtyard at 200 First Street, outside of Shelby’s Coffee Shoppe. The costume parade will walk on the sidewalk though Beaches Town Center with costume contest winners announced following the parade. Prizes will be awarded. Trick or Treating is available for children in all of the participating shops and restaurants in Beaches Town Center during and after the parade.”

ST. AUGUSTINE AMPITHEATER: HAUNTED HAYRIDE & ENCHANTED FOREST HOSTED BY ANASTASIA STATE PARK AND THE FRIENDS OF ANASTASIA STATE PARK
Enchanted Forest: October 24 & 25 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Admission is $4
Haunted Hayride: October 24 & 25 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Admission price not listed, I’m not sure if it is an additional cost.

ALHAMBRA DINNER THEATRE WEEKDAY SCHOOL MATINEE: Once Upon a Time
October 24 10:30 a.m. (doors open at 10:00 a.m.) Admission: $8 + tax
Friday is a Teacher Planning Day, so they're out of school!

MAYOR PEYTON'S BOOK CLUB: ONLINE REGISTRATION NOW OPEN
For Duval kids who are 4 years old by September 1, 2008, and who will be attending kindergarten in the 2009-2010 school year.
