Jade Monkey What?

Have you ever thought, "man it would be cool to have a city wide scavenger hunt?" Well even if you haven't I know a few people that have tried it, it never got anywhere. Well now is your chance to support one if you ever wanted to see it happen. Three weeks ago Jacksonville.com's Johnathan announced on the UrbanJacksonWeekly radio show that BeforeTheNextFullMoon was coming and used it as a recommendation. Since then the clues have been coming out every Saturday.

clue one: From the dark blue, where the value of a small spec of grit will become all too clear…
clue two: You’ll find my tshirts where “any occurrence or object that is strange, unusual, or unique” can be found. Go there ask for a free thsirt, the more people I see wearing them this week the easier clue 3 will be.
clue three: is a picture clue follow this link

I didn't get the fist clue but I got the last two. If you guessed clue two as, "I need to go to Anomaly and ask for a free shirt" you would have been right. The only promise made by the website is the reward will be substantial. What that means who knows. If you ever wanted to be part of a big scavenger hunt the thought and design put into beforethenextfullmoon might supply you with rewards of excitement. I hope the end of the clues are a map to a party on top of some parking garage with free bands, food, and drink, right. Bad ass Jade Monkey, I'd get a tattoo.

Arturo Releases Summer Line

In some way you are familiar with Arturo Clothing. If you have been to any Jacksonville event you might have seen them selling clothing, bags and buttons accompanied most of the time by their boston terrier named Bean. The Jacksonville based clothing company has just made their summer line available online through their Etsy shop. If for some reason you don't like ordering online you can usually catch up with them at the bottom of the stairs of the old library during Art Walk.

Check It Norm's Killing It

If you like skateboarding like I do, I hope youv'e been watching/reading the Bustopmag blog. I've notice recently Norm Stovall the blog author has turned up the heat. He's added a chat box that has been useful especially during the recent Graver Scandal(capital "s" it's a thing) and he has been making a lot more frequent post. He's defiantely got the Jacksonville Skate scene on lock. A few of my favorite post are 10 questions with Dorian Wrenn, the Cory VS. Kendall Ante Up Finals, The Crown coverage by Jaxscene(of course), the Crown Cookout Montage, and anything related to Graver and the Memorial.

I'll leave you with a few Skate related comments. Springfield needs a skatepark and go to the Ante Up Game Of Skate Round 2 at The Triple B (bikes, bags, and beats) on Main.

Goveg.com/PETA in Hemming Plaza

There is a little more excitement downtown today then usual. Maybe it is from people telling stories of seeing all the free jazz this weekend. Maybe it is cause the sun is finally out and it's such a nicer day compared to any in the past week. Maybe it's cause goveg.com and PETA are giving away free veggie dogs. Veggie dogs, no way couldn't be it. Maybe it's cause the people serving the veggie dogs are wearing green lettuce bikini's.

and for all those the forgot it i'm putting a link to The Vegetarian fight song.

Shooting A Travel Show This Weekend.. (A Email From Kurt)

"Hello, my name is Kurt Rogers and I am a Jax local living at the beach now and managing the Fly's Tie Irish Pub. I am shooting a pilot for a travel show this weekend in Riverside and Downtown. Will start off at the RAM talking to Dr. Wood and some local vendors, at one it will be off to 13 Gypsies, then we are going to Bold City Brewery, after that we are meeting with Ian from SHantyTown @ the bags, bikes, and beats complex and finishing off the night at ShantyTown. Feel free to post it as a happening, it will be nice to have some people come out to Shanty Town or the complex and even have lunch at 13 gypsies. Let me know. Thanks"

Eagles Go Up For Discussion At Memorial Park

click for close up

"Burroughs, who grew up playing football at the park, said the association is having bronze eagles cast to replace similar statues removed from the park in the 1940s. The new eagles should be installed sometime this summer."
-Quote taken from Jacksonville.com post "Park's Smashed Wall To Be Repaired Soon".

"When Memorial Park was completed in 1924, two great cast-stone eagles framed the famous bronze statue of winged youth, executed by sculptor Adrian Pillars. It is not known whether Pillars designed the eagles as well. It is also unknown what happened to them, but sometime in the mid-1930s the pair of eagles was removed from the park in Riverside and placed in Confederate Park in Springfield, where they remain today. This photo was taken in 1933 when the eagles were still in Memorial Park."

Second Saturday Block party Organizer Interview and coverage

Pictured center is Pernell (Furor Thin), organizer of the Second Saturday Block parties on Park and King streets and founder of Power Douglas which later disbanded in 2009.

You’ve been a man of many undertakings. What can you say you’re most proud of.
Pernell: The completion of the Power Douglas album, because of everything beneath the soil of the entire endeavor. It is one of the most romantic dances I’ve ever done!

As the owner (in part) of the hair salon Kabre Cyntanna, did you imagine having this sort of business and how did you come upon the park st location?
Pernell: Since childhood I've had a barbarically independent personality and I've always known that I had to carve out my own village in order to frolic. We chose the Riverside area because it is the most esoteric part of town.

People measure successes in different ways, what says success to you?
Pernell: When one can be somewhat impervious to social conditioning and set perpetual grown in motion. Emotional Quotient (development) and spiritual identity in alpestrine measure.

Have you attended any activities locally, of course beside your own? Anomaly craft night, community fests, midnight mass, movie nights, ect...
Pernell: Not anything notable man, my last film was "The Fall" directed by Tarsem and I saw that in Manhattan. I wanted to catch up with the Monotonix at Jack Rabbits. They were cool and we have the same booking agent.

Have you ever contemplated a daring change in wardrobe or style?
Pernell: Probably every nanosecond. But at the same time, style is weightless, only subjected to your eye.

Have you ever found your self engaged in politics?
Pernell: The person formally known as me at that time, was vehemently militant. I'm politically neutral at the present.

Have you had or have any interesting voice mail greetings?
Pernell: Yeah, all the thinly veiled Scandinavian or Nigerian escrow transfer schemes that will net me at least six figures and Madoff starter kit file.

Do you have any artistic undertakings that you don’t really share with people?
Pernell: Dave, such byzantine inquisitions interwined with puzzle wrapping! ha. There's noway to answer that man.

When was the last time you won a prize and what was it?
Pernell: No prizes that I'm cognizant of but my label proprietor submitted votes for best alternative Grammy album last year. We all know Grammy/Oscars are the most fantastic, viable, and creatively relevant wards in the history of humanity.

What single element do you think could improve our local scene?
Pernell: Expatriation of the terminal apathy toward internationalism and authentic progression.

Interview by David.
Click HERE to read past interviews.

On past Second Saturday Block parties there has been band performances, fire breathing performances, artists, artwork, DJs, wine, hors d'oeuvres, and other festivities along with businesses that stay open for the event. Here is a video of The Solar Nomads Fire troop performing.

Video shot by Jamie Armstrong, edit down by David.

It's pending whether the even will continue but if you would like to see more of these kinds of things please comment, Second Saturdays needs more support and reception from the scene and community.

By the way right now Kabre Cyntanna is running a couple special; a free haircut for your friend or partner when you receive a service. Ends May 23rd.

Decisions About Public Art

JaxScene tries it's best to be more factual then opinions. There is just something I was wondering. Who decided what public art gets spread out across the city? Is there a board that decides," yes we can put those on every street corner in town". What credentials are needed to make these decisions? Who makes these decisions? Is it even ridiculous I'm asking?
Below are two pieces of public art. They both got put up without a public vote. I have to look at both of them every time I drive by them. How come one is not only allowed but protected by the city and the other one might go to jail for putting up. For the record I like them both I like public art.
