LOW and bigbearlittlebear @ Jack Rabbits - 2/19/09

You'll notice I didn't take any pics of the crowd. That's because you weren't effing there! Something's gotta give Jacksonville.

Since you missed the show, I'll go ahead and let you know that bigbearlittlebear, a new local band, played their first show and it went really well. They use some rad visuals in their set as they play a rack of synths, MacBooks, and various other doodads to create their electronic shoegaze magnificence. Bryan told me they should playing some more shows at Jack Rabbits soon and hopefully some other (cheaper) places as well. Keep an ear to the ground.

IMG_2355

But here's the deal...

I recently got into an argument about which bands to support. First of all, I am all about the local stuff. I love free (and cheap) shows and getting to see new acts and old favorites. But the Jacksonville music scene will never truly thrive until it becomes a desirable location for at least smaller touring bands to stop at. This allows for opening opportunities for local acts and as a result, increased exposure.

So the question is, why aren't you going to shows? If I had to guess I'd say it's ticket prices. During the week, shows start on time and end usually before 12:30 so it can't be that. So are the venues overcharging us to meet their bottom line in these tough economic times or are the bands getting greedy. Gas prices aren't out of control right now so in my opinion they need to lower their ticket prices to get people out.

However, I went to a show (Dr. Dog) in St. Augustine and it was packed! How the hell is St. Augustine attracting better bands than Jax and drawing huge crowds? Are the venues not doing enough to promote the bands that do come through? Sound off and tell us what you think!

Hookah Sunday at Steamworks

David here, I am starting a bring-your-own-hookah and friends event at Steamworks. The first night is this Sunday at 8pm to test the waters. It may be a regular thing. Got a hookah? Come and lounge it up with me!

If you have no hookah, Steamworks does have games, a bar, and sitting booths with tables. also, most people share.

NOTE: 18 or older please.
Please practice safety handling the coals. Do not burn any part of Steamworks. Have a cup of water at your table to prevent any burns.
Do not attempt to smoke anything illegal in the hookahs.
Finally... be tidy!

2/21 Reax Show At The Pearl

You might be wondering, what is Reax? and is that a typo The Pearl had bands play. Reax is a music, culture magazine that use to cover South Florida. They just recently made the decision to expand to cover Northeast Florida and wanted to throw a party at The Pearl, it can happen. Support it, read it, collect it, they seem like good people. Reax is also helping put on the 3 day Harvest of Hope Music Festival in St Augustine March 6th-8th. The line up is amazing, I was going to name my favorites but I got things to do today. If you already decided to go you should purchase your tickets soon.

A Better Jacksonville - Bid The Landfill

Jaxscene's business isn't politics (well...not in the strict sense), but we do think that our business is helping to create a better Jacksonville. So with that said, I'd like all Jaxscene readers to take a look at this Jacksonville issue regarding the city's no-bid contract with Waste Management and PLEASE sign the petition at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/BidTheLandfill/index.html:

This is "A Better Jacksonville's" first order of business:

We are currently working on a project to put pressure on the Jacksonville City Council to reject a no-bid 35 year $75,000,000 contract with Waste Management.

The city hasn't met with any of the other interested candidates for this contract, and Waste Management happens to have two high level employees among the Mayor's advisers. There are many reasons that this would be bad, reasons ranging from WM's poor record to the premise that such a huge chunk of our tax dollars would be spent without even a cursory review of all available options. We need to set the precedent that our local government will engage in these processes in a fair, transparent way.

The vote is coming soon. If you're on board with our friendly opposition, let City Council know by lending your digital signature to this petition: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/BidTheLandfill/index.html.

After you click "submit," you'll be solicited for a donation to the petition site we're using. Just ignore that and close the window. Your signature is recorded after you click "submit."

Thank You,
Max Wood

Make A Pledge To Participate

At first I was going to set out and knock on doors and businesses and ask them to participate in this world wide event that started in Sydney, Australia two years ago. 2.2 million people turned off their lights for one hour. Last year 400 cities in every continent participated, some iconic landmarks that participated were Sydney Opera House, Bangkok's Wat Arun Buddhist temple, the Coliseum in Rome, Stockholm's Royal Castle, London's City Hall, New York's Empire State Building, Sears Tower in Chicago and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Other symbols going dark included Cola-Cola's famous billboard in Times Square and the Google homepage.
With less then 41 days and a busy schedule I realized it would be difficult to propose this idea to a city that I think should naturally should come up with their own ideas to stay in touch with the rest of the world.

So all I want to do is ask people to make a pledge to participate. Comment and tell me what you're going to do to participate.
Things you can do:
Turn you house lights off for 1 hour.
Ask your neighbor to turn their lights off for 1 hour.
If you have connections with local stores, lighted city landmarks and restaurants ask them to participate.
Have a blog post a link to this pledge post.

Whatever you can do to turn off the lights pledge it by commenting, spread the word.

Something New: The Jaxscene Tumblr

What's that and why would I like it?
Tumblr can handle email and text message posting. I thought I would try it out on anyone that wants to be part of it.

What can I do with it? A lot you can take a picture with your camera phone right now say of the city, (please keep it Jacksonville) related and send it to mokox966@tumblr.com and it will be posted 6 seconds later. You can text message and send video. You can use your home or work computer and email a flyer or text and it will show up.

What is your tumblr address? http://jaxscene.tumblr.com

Where do I send what I want to post? mokox966@tumblr.com

Who do I contact if I post something and don't like what I posted. email jaxscene@yahoo.com

So go ahead and try it.

With all the time on my hands lately (sike, more like stress) I watch a lot of YouTube videos and listen to music on Hypem.com I got bored so I made this. There is no video for this Lady Sovereign song I think it comes out in April. It's not a original idea just entertaining to me. This is not the first time these girls have been put to a song.

JaxScene One Year Old!

swoosh

Well it's been quite a year for JaxScene. A year filled with event coverage, photos, videos, street interviews, scene commentary, and now our own social network - all by contribution. There is a lot of possibilities ahead as well as new ideas that will bring JaxScene farther in 2009.

Some ideas in the mix are JaxScene TV, a things to do call-in phone number, a street JaxZine and other exciting projects. I personally see JaxScene as a one stop site that ties together every one out there making this town better and better place to live.

While we like to keep JaxScene relative we are always open to contributions and comments. Have an event flier? Email us. Have comments on daily events? Please post. Or even photos you took of an event, send us the link. And hey any donations are welcome as some ideas won't see the light of day unless we can pay for them.

As the new year of JaxScene starts I am making a brick wall that runs down the right side of the blog containing graphic signs linking to our top reoccurring items (staples). For this anniversary, I want graffiti like tags of local people and institutions we support. Please send me yours now at gamophyte@hotmail.com.

Tags will be modified and fit on the wall by me. They must be sent smaller than a megabyte in the fallowing image formats; JPG, BMP, GIF, or PSD. All tags should be obviously be relative and appropriate. Feel free to email me with questions on this process.

- David
