The Vitamin Circus Variety Show

Vitamin Circus Variety Show - Episode 1 from Richard Colado on Vimeo.

How did you come up with the idea for the vitamin circus variety show?
I got stuck on watching clips of the Dean Martin SHow on youtube and thought "that looks like fun." So I called up Mark Hubbard to see if he would help me film and edit a variety show. He said yes.

Who is all involved in vitamin circus variety show?
Mark and I put it together. But I would have to say that other people are involved to, just not in a direct way. Nearly everyone I talk to about the show has a good idea for it, like an idea for a segment or a skit or interview or something, whatever.

Is vitamin circus a blog or a video show or a blog that has a video show?
Its like a blog that has a video show, but I'm pretty sparatic about both. Sometimes I feel like writing something, sometimes I feel like making a video. I hope I can keep it up for a while because its pretty fun and opens me up a bit, lets my guard down. I like to be vulnerable, emotionally vulnerable... that sound stupid but I mean well.

Was making the video time consuming and how often do you think we will see them?
Like I said it is a bit sparatic. I really don't want to think about the show that much at all, I just want to have fun doing it. So someone has an idea I'll say "yeah that sounds good, lets film it" and if it works out then cool, if not then whatever, we'll film something else. But if it ever seems like it would take a lot of time to do or involves a lot of planning etc, I will probably do something else. I'm already involved in a bunch of other things that require planning and stuff. I just want to have fun and film it. Doing whatever.

Would you say your blog has a goal or are you going to take is one day at a time?
One day at a time seems more my frame of mind in the present. I get crazy when I think to much about the future and what could happen or if I'm wasting my time or if I'm going to fail. I used to get all wonky like that. Worrying about shit that isn't even real. I still do run into it from time to time, but much less of late and I'm trying to be rid of it all together. Just produce things and enrich life and move on. Like the universe and stuff.

I believe in your first post, which happen to be on valentines day, you said you want it to be like a umbrella for all your projects, how many projects are you currently involved in?
Five, if you don't count raising a kid and being married.

Those are:

1)clone: a collaboration with Ben Cooper. We're making a concept album that tells a fictitious story of a human clone. We're half way done.

2)rickoLus: This is me and all the music inbetween. At the momment I'm collecting idea's for my next album.

3)Richard Love and The Mix Tape CLub: A band I got together to play live an album of pop songs I wrote and recorded last year.

4)The Vitamin Circus Variety Show: ...yeah.

5) Mothers Basement: An assignment based recording and music project between Jeremiah Johnson, Ben Cooper and I. We havent done a new assignment in a year or so, but it's still there.

Oh yes, let us not forget the all powerful BIOWULF!

Another Reason This City Can Be Better

I think it sucks that this city doesn't support being green. Yeah I'm talking about recycling, reusing, supporting the use of solar power and energy efficient buildings. The only things I can think that happens in this city that is pro-environment are the things the citizens and businesses do. Publix taking styrofoam, Whole Foods Market taking number 5 plastics, Springfield having a food garden, Jax Beach having a food garden, The Pearl recycling. I'm sure there is a lot more but it most likely has nothing to do with the city. The city doesn't even recycle downtown. I know a lot of people don't believe in recycling, but why not encourage reusing or not using plastics and styrofoam when possible. I just think it goes deeper, it's a gateway to caring. The guy that recycles doesn't pour motor oil down the sewer. It's also a perfect way to take part and feel part of a community, which is something this city needs. It does upset me that the whole world is taking part in Earth Hour and our mayor and our city hasn't mentioned a word. How cool would it be to see downtown go dark. I'm tired of old heartless farts in office taking handouts for the wrong contracts. Thinks about the kids, life isn't so immediate.

A Video From Sundays Show

I would say recently I have taken on a new calling to try to go out and support the local live music scene as much as possible. After spending a whole weekend at Harvest of Hope and listening to just as many local bands as the ones known nationally and worldwide, I realized that North Florida's local music can easily get mistaken for the bands that have to fly more then 2 hours to be able to perform.
Normally I wouldn't go out three nights in one weekend but I used to be a huge Cadets fan and I didn't know when I would get to see the old lead singer Chuck Smyth, now a Gainesville resident, perform again.
There were a lot of entertaining moments, like when Rick told us Christian asked him earlier if he was wearing a Han Solo costume, and a few disappointing moments due to sound trouble. I thought I would share one thing that happened that is a prime example of why going to shows, or at least this show, is worth it. I decided to not show the full clip because I personally would rather you go out and support the venues and bands rather then sit at home and watch the video. Hope you enjoy, pictures coming soon.

JAXSCENE INTERVIEW: Chris

Chis is a well traveled and well read, kind soul who believes in people and helping those in need. When not making music he's promoting new ideas and gaining life experiences.

What were the top two best costumes you have worn out?
Chris: A Demon one year... it was sweet. Full makeup and I had no hair. Then a pirate with sword and everything. My friend let me barrow his one-shot with powder and everything... it was pretty cool.

Do you have any favorite local artists?
Chris: The band "i am god" and Summer Black; You can run into her at future Art Walks. She also has paintings at the south FCCJ campus.

What large achievement do you think could improve or push forward Jacksonville?
Chris: Put bike lanes on every street and laws in place to protect bikers.

What's your favorite comic strip?
Chris: As far as mainstream ones, "The Far Side", always been a favorite. Other than that my friend Ryan made once called simply "Comic Strip". It had blank bubbles to be filled by anyone at a coffee shop.

Do you believe any of the mythological creatures of legend could have been real at least at one time?
Chris: Yes.................

If a offbeat furniture manufacture awarded you with making the design of your choice, what furniture would we see form you?
Chris: It would be a king size bed frame that would resemble a chopped tree stump. It would faces and other carvings.

Have you tried any exotic foods?
Chris: Yeah. I've had grilled turtle out at Ocala. My Canadian friend raised it. But it died and we cooked it.

Are you currently reading anything?
Chris: Yes... um. Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonrider" series. "Dragonriders of Pern".

What would be your dream career?
Chris: Traveling around feeding hungry people. Like having a mobile kitchen. Or I would be a Circus Clown, but juggling fire and eating fire.

What immediately comes to mind what i say "hot sauce"?
Chris: Ha ha.... Chicken wings.

Jacksonville is being blessed once again with another great band coming to our town to play for us. Due to the reputation of our town and supporting live music I didn't want to just sit around and hope people will just go out and see them. I made a flyer and found you videos of one of their popular songs. Hope to see you out.

JAXSCENE INTERVIEW: Kristen Ferris

Kristen is a frequenter of happenings around town. You're sure to see her rabble rousing the neighborhood, dancing her arse off, and exchanging wit and laughter with friends.

A mix drink you created explodes in popularity and can be found almost anywhere. What is it called and what's goes into it?
Kristen: Crazy, and it would be every possible liquor.

What Clubs, venues, or bar do you frequent?
Kristen: Eclipse, Pearl, Steamworks, Monty's, and Tom and Betty's.

Are there any words you didn't fully understand the definition until recently?
Kristen: The clear meaning Rabble Rousing.

If a plane crashed on the border of Florida and Georgia where would they bury the survivors?
Kristen: In Florida? Wait. Depends on how long they will survive.
(almost gotcha)

If you could bring back one thing old school for the new generation to experience what would it be?
Kristen: 8-tracks fo sho...

Do you have a favorite year?
Kristen: Any of the 80s. Because the music and the clothing was awesome. 89 because it actually snowed in Jacksonville.

Finish this "I like my men like I like my" joke.
Kristen: I like my men like I like my shoes... special and Velcro. Hahaha.

O.C.D., or accident prone, or both?
Kristen: Both. I'm a big ol' mess.

What was your first brand name pair of shoes that you could remember?
Kristen: They were Reeboks, they were black and white like jogging style.

How much wood could a wood chuck; chuck, if a wood chuck lived in Miami?
Kristen: A whole lot because there's lots of trees and vegitation. Yeah...

JaxScene Interview In This Month's EU!

I have no idea why it's taken this long to mention it but your friendly neighborhood monthly guide to entertainment and more, EU, has featured JaxScene in their latest issue!

Kellie interviewed Tom and me about the site, why we do what we do, and our plans for the future. It's a really well-done article so be sure and pick up the latest issue wherever fine free publications are distributed. You can also download it in PDF format here.

A big thanks to EU for the support and more importantly to you, our faithful readers, for making JaxScene all that it is. We couldn't do it without you!

Harvest of Hope 2009 The Video

Okay this should be the last Harvest of Hope post. Unless somehow Amir made it down and back up to shoot friday at The Pearl without me noticing. I just wanted to give the people that didn't go a glimpse of what they missed.

Harvest of Hope Highlights

By now you've probably seen Tom's kickass pics from last weekend's Harvest of Hope Fest so I don't have to tell you that it was AWESOME! But I'm going to anyway. At length, so deal with it.

In my experience, festivals of this magnitude don't happen all that often around these parts so I saw no choice but to attend. Plus, the lineup! Bad Brains, Propaghandi doing their first show in the US since Bush took office, The National, Against Me!, Black Kids, GZA et cetera, et cetera! And what a bargain at $40 for all three days and $30 for 4 camping passes. So what's your excuse, hmmm?

Honestly, I don't really remember that many details (it was that kind of weekend) other than what was documented with pictures but I'll do my best to recount some of the highlights for you in the following unordered list (the links are to the pics):

  • Okay, Day 1 kinda sucked. Uh, Girl Talk? Pretty much exactly what you'd expect. White kid hipster dance party mosh pit hump-fest. Fun, sorta, but lost it's flare real quick-like. At one point, the DJ guy (let's be honest, that's all he is) was on the table, broke it, and the music didn't evn skip. You do the math.

  • Getting faded with the Zombie Bikes crew however never gets old! Reax Magazine hooked the zombies up with passes to hold workshops and let folks ride the tall bikes.

  • Camping was a blast! We grilled hot dogs (the vegans grilled PBJs) and sang kumbayah (not really). Swarms of dirty hippies kept us up all night with their drum circles leaving us no choice but to keep drinking Natty Light late into the evening.

  • Waking up at 9am because it was cold when you went to bed but the sun is beating on you like Mother Superior in Catholic school and you're swimming in sweat is actually a great way to start the day. I'm not kidding. One bottle of H2O and it's party on!

  • Getting a tight buzz before 11am. Always a good time!

  • Riding the tall bike with said buzz, even better!

  • Day 2 was a vast improvement. Saw some old favorites and was introduced to some great stuff I'd never heard before like Lymbyc Systym.

  • Photo pass!

  • Jacksonville was representing too! BLORR and Sunbears! played and hopefully made some new fans out of the crowd.

  • I personally got a kick out of seeing Bad Brains for the first time. HR is one wild dude. But I can totally see how a lot of people were saddened by the performance.

  • Tilly and the Wall - first time I saw them I was blown away by the concept but now I think the novelty has worn off and I couldn't get into it.

  • Propaghandi played their first show in the states since Bush took office. That's a helluva grudge! Good stuff.

  • Hammocks!

  • Being too drunk to even watch any more music.

  • The Monotonix rocked our faces off and showed us their hairy Israeli asses in the process. So much dirt!

  • MURS + Whole Wheat Bread = The Invincibles. Sang a song about I-10. DUUUUUVAAAL!

  • Kool Kieth's filthy-ass mouth.

  • Black Kids reppin J-ville!

  • Being too partied out to even stay for like half the bands I was there to see in the first place.

Okay, that last one wasn't that awesome at all, but it was an all around killer time with good music and good friends and no showering and a wicked sunburn and powerful lust for red salmon, ha! (again, not really)...
