College Street House Show - July 26, 2009

Sometimes you don't have to pay a cover or even leave the neighborhood to catch some of the best entertainment and fun in the city. There have been countless Riverside house shows to varying degrees of magnitude over the years (I presume) but the most recent was the best I've attended so far.

IMG_5474

A handful of local bands played, including Wudun, Matrix Infinity, and The Late Great Magic [Something-or-other] as well as Psychic Reality (SF) and Royal Chord (all the way from Australia). I still hear the label "noise show" in reference to these events which I find to be a misnomer. It can get noisy, sure, but it's simply experimental if anything and not a sonic assault necessitating copious amounts of psychotropic substances (although, they don't hurt). It might not appeal to everybody but if you've never heard these bands, you owe it to yourself to check them out.

IMG_5452

Watching the bands meant crowding into the dining room and sweating your ass off but it was well worth it. And not everybody was there for the music. The entire house was full, plus the porch, plus the sizable front yard. There was no free beer but that didn't stop the droves from gathering and having a kick-ass Sunday night with friends and meeting new folks. Despite the volume of attendees, JSO merely crept by a few times and didn't harass anyone or try and shut it down.

IMG_5468

If you missed it, no worries, these things happen all the time and hopefully ones in the future will be as successful as this one was. In fact, there just so happens to be one Saturday night featuring some super-awesome bands, so don't miss out.

REAX Needs Volunteers This Weekend

If anyone out there feels like helping out REAX for the Summertime In The City Event, they need volunteers to help out in their booth Saturday at The Riverside Arts Market and also the The BBB warehouse. I think what this entails is maybe getting there early, sitting at the booth, giving out REAX magazines and manning a email list basically just helping out. Also you can volunteer to help out just at one, or the other or say I can't get there till this time. If you are interested just email me tom@reaxmusic.com

Little William as Kiefer Sutherland

First off I don't know if it's cool to be posting a stupid video with the REAX TV clip at the beginning. I know I will be using a format like that in the future but for things like interviews and band clips. Maybe I'll just say this is a practice video so I can get a feel of things to come.

Summertime In The City

I was going to make a post about my recommendations from my take on the event. I got this big list of stuff that is going to be dope. But then I saw Joey Marchy's post at UrbanJacksonville and it's way nicer then anything I can pull off. With that said I'll just summarize and send you over there.
It's all weekend:
Friday at TSI - Edan w/ Dahga, Willie Evans Jr, Paten Locke, Dillon and Tough Junkie, and the Big Bucks DJs.
Saturday - All kinds of things planned. A break dance battle at the Riverside Arts Market starting at noon. After that head over to the Triple B Warehouse in Springfield for the mayhem to continue with a free keg, pizza party and live mural painting by Thursto and others, skateboarding and bicycling. That night at 10pm, walk over to Shantytown for the final event with hip hop from Larry Otis, Mr. Al Pete, The Elevated Hip Hop Experience, Heavy Flow, The N Word, Dr. Sam Beckett, Dope Sandwich, Steadfast, and more!

    Warehouse Show - July, 21, 2009

There's a new semi-secret spot in Jacksonville for art and live music.

In the otherwise unsightly, slightly dilapidated, industrial part of the urban core that makes up the warehouse/factory district off Talleyrand you will find a seemingly unused warehouse space on Wambolt St marked only 8B. At least by day. But by night this unassuming location comes alive, normally due to the group of artists who recently became its tenants. It is also the practice space of a couple local bands and was recently used to host a live show.

    IMG_5378

The fact that this area of town goes completely dead not long after the sun goes and that the nearest residential area is at least a mile away makes it the perfect location for a rogue, off-the-map venue. There's no one to bother and no one to bother you. On Tuesday, July 21, the spot showcased local band Tourist Trap as well as Panzram out of Ft. Meyers. The crowd was a modest one, but impressive nonetheless being the first attempt at anything of this nature. In addition to live music, there were veggies grilling and cold beverages.

Clay Doran, aka Squid Dust, is among the artists responsible for putting the space together. Well known for his work in organizing the shows that took place in the Old Library Basement during previous Art Walks, you already have an idea of what to expect and the potential this place has. Rather than simply clear a space for the band to play and crowd to gather, the time and care was put in to make an interesting and appealing atmosphere complete with subdued lighting and installation art.

    IMG_5357

While you can count on both art and music shows occurring here on a semi-regular basis in the future, it is clear that this is only the beginning of something that will blossom into what could well be a refreshingly unique nucleus of art in culture in Jacksonville.

Pineapples For The Hubbard House at The Riverside Arts Market

Somehow the Riverside Arts Market acquired a hefty donation of pineapples from Winn Dixie. I was telling Tony I recently bought a pineapple from the supermarket and after I was done with it, I planted the crown and it's been growing. From what I've read it's going to take more then a year for it to bloom, but it's cool having a pineapple for a plant. Thought I would take a photo to maybe give someone another reason to buy one today and show support for The Hubbard House.

    Jaxscene and REAX Merge

So I've been waiting a while to announce this. Last night I met up with the people from REAX, we have been having meetings about Jaxscene and REAX working together. We talked about the web design and how it will take a couple months to complete and decided to just start the transition now before the site design is finished. So in the next couple weeks/months you will start seeing Jaxscene slowly switch over to a Jaxscene REAX.

For those that don't know what REAX is it's a monthly publication that you can pick up at presently 18 locations around Jacksonville. They are a Music, Art, and Culture Magazine. They also have their issues viewable online. Most of there articles cover things that involve Tampa, Orlando, Gainesville, and just recently Jacksonville and St. Augustine. The cool thing about it is it's distributed nationwide so coverage from Jacksonville will be sent to California, Minnesota, Oregon, Maine, and more and also take subscriptions. I heard a story of a girl from I believe Scandinavia, telling REAX how she enjoys their magazine. So I'm basically going to cover Jacksonville events with Jon Bosworth, and also be the Jacksonville web presence, to give people that extra exposure I believe is important and good for our city.

What this means for Jaxscene...hopefully it won't change much just get better. REAX talked about how Jaxscene has a community feel to it and wants it to stay that way. You will still have a blog style set up and a way to view just Jacksonville as you do Jaxscene. I currently get zero dollars for Jaxscene and never get offered free anything and this is what you get. With REAX there might be some funding so you will see me covering more things in way I always wanted to. As far as the contributors of Jaxscene I hope they don't go anywhere and stick with me. Sure that's hard to ask for, I think the Jaxscene contributors are some of the nicest people who care the most about this city.

Well that's the news. If you have never seen REAX - get it, support it, it supports you. Looking forward to the things to come, tom p.

    JAXSCENE INTERVIEW: Cay

(She drew this on my laptop on the spot when I didn't have a camera) Cay is a fun and creative person with a interesting since of humor.

Have you or someone you know, had any cooking disasters?
Cay: Yeah. Oh my gosh it was terrifying. It was maybe during lunch time and my ex and I were trying to cook while he was in a experimental mode. We were both in the kitchen, I don’t know what happen, the wok was cooking and suddenly a cone of fire shot up to the ceiling, not far from my face.

Do you have a favorite word?
    Cay: Ah... Poop.

Have you ever had an uncommon pet?
Cay: Yeah... (grabs a translator). A crawfish.

What do you think is more important that we explore; the deepest parts of the sea or outer space?
Cay: Oooooo. Ah that’s a tricky question, aren’t they the same thing? Hahaha. The deepest part of the sea. Maybe they’re connected anyways.

If you had a house that contained an out of the ordinary thing or room, what would it be?
Cay: I kinda of want Pee-wee Herman's house.

What was the last car you owned that was notable in memories, fondness, or greatness?
Cay: ... ha ha ha. It didn’t take fuel, it was foot powered. My little tike car as a kid.

Do you have any jokes you made up?
Cay: No, it’s against my religion.

What would you build out of 20 refrigerator boxes?
Cay: A submarine. Don’t ask me how.

What’s you favorite 80’s TV show?
Cay: Dr. Slump and Arale-chan. (Japanese)

If you were a design engineer of a product, what would it be??
    Cay: A plastic banana *

I was trying to think of a title for this post. The video is a old video I had it for some time. I have a bunch of videos of bands on old disk and hard drives. I wanted to start showing them every now and then my problem was coming up with a catchy title or staple for these old videos. I didn't want to call it something cheese like, rewind, or flashback, looking back, so for now it's blah till a better name comes. For some reason I like titling all my post like "Things To Do" "Street Interviews" "Random Photos" "Recommended Shows" "Family Edition" you get the point.

Well I found this video today I believe it's from 9th & main show with Gil Mantera's Party Dream, Grand Buffet, and Astronautalis on December 19 2006 I can be wrong. People in the band were Mark Lynn on drums, Bert No shirt on Bass, and Big Dunn on Keyboard.

    Jaxscene: Update

First off sorry that for the lack of post asides the "Things To Do" post. The past few weeks have been slow as far as shows or events. I've also got myself into a lot of new projects and getting ready for this art show on Friday at TSI. Jaxscene is working on a lot of new ideas and has been waiting to launch them because we hopefully have good news for you in the future but we got to get there first.

One idea that's now been in the works, sorry I'm releasing this but we have had the idea for a while and like I said have been waiting. But hey it's just a widget they can be updated.

This is the Jaxscene "Things To Do" widget. You can go to the link by clicking the phone, the widget is free. Say your sitting in school your friend ask you what's going on tonight with a click of a bottom, you got a list of decisions. You click on the link and you can see the flyer, for times, cost, whatever.

I also made a widget if you want to scan the whole Jaxscene blog from you phone to see all the post. Click here.

Like I said there might be good news coming and we might have something better coming, well a lot of better things coming. The only reason I let this out is I had it done for a while I wanted to get it out cause things on the web get outdated fast.

The other thing that is new is the Playlist on the sidebar. The playlist is the exact songs that is played at The Pearl on Friday's. I know it isn't all the newest hippest jams. It's just a mix of what I was playing and what was requested. There is some new jams in it. Anyways it's there and will most likely be updated every week.
